My great-granfather's entry in the 1901 census details that he was a machineer at an ordnance works. Given that he lived in Scotswood I am thinking that it's most likely that this was the well known Vickers Armstrong works. I am not really clear on what form the company took at that time, ie. was it Vickers, Armstrong or Vickers Armstrong? I have come across a lot of historical reference on the net, but nothing definitive, so if anyone knows from their own research what the set up was in 1901, I'd be grateful to know too. (Or am I making too much of an assumption, were there other ordnance factories in the neighbourhood?). Thanks for looking and happy holidays, Paul
Paul I think this is the Royal Ordnance Factory at Birtly that is refered to not Vickers my son works there if you want any more info on it just ask audrey

Even today, but more so in C19th the word "ordnance" means/meant weapons and ammunition. And he would have been on the doorstep of Lord Armstrong's works.which at that time was making and exporting plenty of " ordnance". Birtley is/was 7/8 miles away.

Many thanks for your reply Michael, it's reassuring at times to have that second opinion and for somebody to agree that ones reasoning makes sense. It's clear now too, that at that time the factory was Armstrongs.
Vickers Armstrong still exists on Scotswood road, Newcastle. My Grandfather worked there from about 1925 to 1965. Scotswood was built primarily to house the workers for Vickers, who made tanks and fighting vehicles during the second war, but didn't make ordnance. They still have a testing ground at Ridsdale in Northumberland. Get in touch if you want any info - I have lots, more than I can put here!
