« on: Friday 12 October 07 19:58 BST (UK) »

Kelly's Directory, please.  This is a long shot but wondered if there is any info of this shop still trading in the dates you have on look up offers. Address I have is just Bedford

F. Gibbons (Name is Florence)  Looks like a greengrocers around 1908 - 1920.  Put photograph of shop on photo board for dating

Many thanks if you can help

Next door is Stonebridges, printers, 4 Midland Road Bedford, still trading in 1936 Kellys, and if I remember were still trading in the 1960's - opposite British Home Stores. In 1836 at no 2 Midland Road was Welch's shoe repair service. There is no Gibbons trading as fruit merchants in 1936 Kellys.

It's in Bedford town centre; where the Harpur centre shopping complex is now, which is in the old Bedford Modern school building.

Interestingly I have a Bedford in pictures book by Richard Wildman (our local historian) published 1995, it has a picture of Welch's cobblers at 2 Midland road with the same shop front. It was demolished in 1962.

If I had a scanner, I'd scanner in the morning, but I don't sorry... John

William Welch, bootmaker, at 2 Midland Road is listed in 1914 Kellys, as per

http://www.historicaldirectories.org/

However in 1910, from same source, is Mrs Minnie Betts, confectioner - hence the chocolate adverts

& in 1903 is William Harvey, confectioner

Perhaps she only ran the shop for short time?  Her father was Albert Richard Gibbons. Mother Emma.  On 1901 she was down as no occ at home. Are there any fH libraries that give electrol info?

Cas,  The Electoral rolls are held the Bedford reference library of Beds Archives

See link for info.....
http://www.galaxy.bedfordshire.gov.uk/webingres/bedfordshire/vlib/0.local_studies/electoral_registers_where.htm

Found another Kellys 1902, 2 Midland Road, was Cheeseman & Munday, confectioners.

So we have 3 different confectioners, 1902, 1903, 1910 (hence the chocolate adverts) --- & then in 1914 its the Bootmaker. So did Florrie sell fruit & veg between 1910-1914 - does that tie up with ages of the people in the picture ?

Yes it could fit.  It may possibly be 1910 - 1914. with what you found.   It is suggested the photo was taken between 1908 - 1920.

If you have it filled by others pre 1910 and post 1914 I think its a very good bet. Thanks for the elecrol info, could I email a request look up or is it just in person?

Also could I request any burial info via email?

Many thanks

Cas,  You could try emailing the Beds Archives with a request to search the electoral roll for the required years - but I think this can only be easily searched by street address, not by person's name.  If you can narrow it down the search it will help. Do you think Florrie was living over the shop ?

The archives may respond saying there will be a charge before they proceed.  You can always visit the archives & they will get the electoral rolls for you to search yourself.

As to burial records - do you have the death certificate of whoever your after. That will narrow down date & place.

Hello Cas,  Apologies first in case you already know this, & for me being nosey.

I've just been looking at censuses & BMD. On 1901 there was such a great time difference between Florrie age 21 & next sister Else age 12, I got curious so I looked further.

Was Florrie born as Townsend ?, to mother Emma Townsend who married Albert Richard Gibbons in Coventry in March 1887.

1881 has married mother Emma Townsend with 1 year old Florence.
1891 Florence is grand-daughter to William & Lucy Ladkin ?

regards John

You have a very good 'nose' lol.

Yes John you are correct, Flo's parents were Emma & Thomas Townsend.

Second marriage for Emma was to Albert Gibbons and all other children were his.  Flo took the name of her stepfather.

Best wishes
