William Dudson
« on: Saturday 13 October 07 01:00 BST (UK) »

Hello everyone,

This is the first time that I have posted a message so I hope that it is the right place.  I am looking for the parents of William Dudson.  He was born in Birmingham England in 1826, and is my Great, Great, Great Grandfather.

He travelled to New Zealand with his wife Margaret (nee O’Donnell) and four of their children, aboard the Contarf.  They arrived in Littleton (Christchurch) New Zealand on the 5th Jan 1859.  The Contarf had sailed from Plymouth on the 15 September 1858.

If anyone knows who will William’s or Margaret’s parents were I would be excited to know.  I have found a copy of William’s death certificate; however it doesn’t name his parents.

Does anyone know about searching parish registers in England?  We do know the year that he was born.

If you are interested in family tree research a great site for here in New Zealand is http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast

Kind regards
Ben

Hi Ben

Welcome to Rootschat!

Per FREEBMD
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/
Their marriage is registered in Walsall Registration Ditrict of Staffordshire , Dec Qtr 1850 ?
Obtaining this certificate would hopefully confirm the name of their fathers, and possibly witness names which can be linked.

How sure are you that he was born in Birmingham? Was that from his death certificate?
Also what were the names and ages of his children - perhaps some of them were born in Birmingham and this is where the connection came about to that place?

In 1851: there is this couple, which I would consider likely to be your couple who married - no children as yet, and wife  is Irish.

1851: Town of Walsall, The Foreign of Walsall, Staffordshire
Ref: HO107 /  Piece 2023 /  Folio  115 /  Pg 4
Address: (None Specific)
Head: William DUDSON 26, Plate layer Rail, b Herefordshire?  or Hertfordshire?
Wife: Margaret DUDSON 23, b Ireland

No town of birth is given, but the county is either Herefordshire or Hertfordshire - unfortunately, it looks like the enumerator made a mistake one way or the other at the Here or Hert stage and has overwritten, so not 100% clear - I think he had written Hert.. and changed it to Here..

Cheers

Hi again

Not sure if you have seen these (or if they are yours!)

and are you related to Rootschatter Mackiwi  - there seems to be a connection to DUDSON in Kaiapoi in yours and mackiwi's family research:

Hi,
Yes there is a connection to William Dudson on the rooksbridge site, which I must have a closer look at.
First marriage to Margaret O Donnell and second to Mary Ann Orchard.
My connection is via Mary Ann Orchard and Thomas Preece her second husband.
I have just recently received this information from another rootschatter who is also related.
