Anyone heard of this place?
« on: Wednesday 17 October 07 14:33 BST (UK) »

Hi

On the 1851 census Isabella Snaith has been transcribed as coming from Beslopbugg, Durham.  Does anyone know where this is or has it been read wrong.  I googled and multimaped but the place is not recognised. UPDATE: Now been told it is Bishopbrigg, Durham but the only Bishopbrigg I can find is in Dunbartonshire.

Hoping that  a few locals might be able to throw some light on it.

Thanks
Joanna

Hi Cavvytri

My broadband is so slow this afternoon, I was just about to modify my topic when I saw your reply.

Unfortunately the only other census she is on is the 41!  However I am modifying to say that the person who read it for me went back to look and now says it's Bishopbrigg in Durham.  The only place with that name is in Scotland as far as google/multimap is concerned.

Hi Joanna

it certainly looks like Bishopbrigg. There are lots of Bishops<xxx> in Co Durham but I can't find a Bishopbrigg. Maybe it shouldn't have been a <do> and might be the Scottish one.

Here it is any way.

PS it says that she was 70 in 1851.

Hi Gadget

I've spent the whole afternoon on this one!  On her children's baptism info it  says that she is a native of Witton le Wear  and then her marriage was at St Andrew Auckland, so I looked at Witton and found that is near Bishops Auckland.  Then going on the IGI found Snawdons (her maiden name) going back some way either in Witton or Auckland including a birth for an Isabella in the right year, so I've come to the conclusion that there must be a small place called Bishopsomething that looks like Bishopbrigg in that area.

Does that make sense?!

Hi again

I've been doing a bit of lateral searching. I think she was on the 1841 with husband George Snaith. I found on the IGI  that he married an Isabella Snawden in Auckland, St Andrew, on 15 July 1799. I then searched the IGI for a bpt of Isabella and found one on 1st Oct 1780, Auckland, St Andrew, father James.

I'm thinking that the Bishopbrigg might well be Bishop Auckland or a part of it.

Regards
