1901 census - ROBINSON

Hope I'm in the right county for this chap.

Can someone look for George William Robinson on the 1901 census please. Sorry, I don't have any other information except that he was a witness at the wedding of his daughter Florence in 1933 at Knotting Bedfordshire.
My Mother always told me Florence's surname was Goosey but this doesn't seem to be the case with what I've found.
I also thought she was born in Finedon Northants but as she married in Knotting Bedfordshire perhaps Mum was wrong on all counts.  Florence wasn't born until 1909 so she won't show up anywhere.

Do you have his occupation or anything else that might give a hint? There are 8 George Robinsons in Bedfordshire in the 1901 Census who are possibles........ all sons. and 3 in Northamptonshire

No.........sorry the info is so vague. This chap is a complete mystery to me. Mum always led me to believe that the family came from Northamptonshire but then why would Florence have got married in Knotting ? I know nowadays it doesn't seem to matter where you get married but then I'd have thought it was a bit more traditional for want of a better word. I'd always thought they came from Finedon but that was when I believed Florence to be a member of the Goosey family.
My lot do give problems..........lol

Hello Marylou,

The marriage cert will give her name on marriage and also her maiden name if she was a widow. Plus her father's name

Then you'll know for sure if she was a Robinson or a Goosey, or both.

Looks like I might have to do that. My Mum was a mine of information (though she either got it wrong this time or there's something a bit scandalous.............lol) but since she had a stroke her mind's not what it was. She's the only person left now in the family to ask about these things.

Hello Mary Lou.....

Is it the marriage in June 1933 in Bedford RD vol 3b page 862 of Florence E Robinson to John R Hall

If your years are accurate, I cannot see birth index of a Florence Robinson in 1909 in either Bedford (for Knotting) or Wellingborough (for Finedon), but it is interesting to see the no of Goosey's appearing for Wellingborough 1908/1909/1910 - but not found your Florence.

Looks almost right John except Florence married John Richard Hale from Knotting.
There were a lot of Gooseys about in Northants and Bedfordshire. I think the Gooseys owned a farm in Souldrop, Beds and a number of cottages there were known as Gooseys Cottages according to one census.........can't remember which one now.

Florence is a bit of mystery. We always knew her as Flo but I wondered if she used her middle name occassionally.

There is a Lieutenant Bernard GOOSEY who died 25/10/44 [aged 22] on the Poddington War Memorial - whic is near Knotting - he was the son of Mabel Florence GOOSEY of Kingsdown in Kent - but presumably she lived in Podington at the time her son was killed.  Most of the Beds War Memorials are online and you should be able to find them easily.

Have you ordered the certificate of Florence's wedding in 1933 [Knotting]...if not I'll look it up at the archives next week?

Your mother may well be right - I find mums usually are! but George may have been a God-father...a divorce seems unlikely in those days

No, I haven't ordered anything so if you can look it up for me I'd be really grateful. Mum seemed so certain Florence was a Goosey I feel there must be some sort of connection.

Oh, just noticed I'd jotted down occupation for George William Robinson as 'engine driver'.  Sorry, got so many scraps of paper (must get them in order!!)

As for her place of birth, well Mum always said it was Irthlingborough but I wonder ..........she could have easily got muddled I suppose but it did come to light that she had a niece who lived in Irthlingborough whose surname was Goosey.
George William Robinson who I've got as her father apparently was a witness at her marriage.......would that have happened, for a father to also be a witness ?

Thank you for that - it gets more interesting because there is a Jack Sydney GOOSEY who was killed on 21/9/18 on the Irthlingborough War Memorial [his next of kin are not listed & neither is his age... but perhaps you can update the info on the site if you find it?]

And please do if you can [as it good to acknowledge these boys and their sacrifice and that of the families]

Your Mum may be closer to the truth of the history than imagined?

It is a bit unusual for a bride's father to be a witness - they usually just give bride away and the witnesses are friends of bride & groom...  But so it will be interesting to see?

She;s a puzzle our Florence and according to Mum if she were alive now she could tell me so much. If there was any scandal or gossip Florence knew it. It was her who told Mum that my gran (on Dad's side) was born out of wedlock. On checking it out she was right, along with three others born out of wedlock.

I could reccomend you look up the Bedfordshire Archives [which is on line] but I have had a quick look and dont think that would help you much.  Beds 1891 census is complete and online at ''free cen''...the only other website you ought to book mark is the ''the historical directories'' online.  They were sort of trade directories/phone books [before phones were common place]?

Thanks cathy. I've tried Bedfordshire archives and had no luck but haven't had a look at Freecen since I found out about George Robinson.............been spending all my time trying to link our Florence to the Gooseys. I'll give that a try.
