Mary Lou,

Here is the marriage:

13th April 1933 in Knotting:

Groom: John Richard HALE, aged 21 of Knotting. Occupation tractor driver.  Father: John George HALE - he was a horse keeper

Bride:  Florence Eileen ROBINSON, aged 24 of Knotting. No occupation recorded. Father: George William ROBINSON - he was an engine driver

Witnesss [3 of them]:

George William ROBINSON
George Edward HALE
Edith Ellen HALE

So George William was an engine driver it seems - whether he was one in 1901 we dont know  Undecided

Many thanks cathy.
Would the fact that Florence was married in Bedfordshire mean she was born there or might she have been born in Northants ?  I'll check out Freecen and see if I can find George Robinson............I don't think northamptonshire is complete on there yet.

Mary Lou

No, but she was resident in the few weeks prior to the marriage [while the banns were being read] at least. The marriage does not tell you where they were born just where they were living at the time.

Her birth is listed though on the free BMD:

Florence Eileen ROBINSON registered in second quarter of 1908 [4b 199]? the reference number is wrong it says  Huh
but it is in Wellingborough district which covers Finedon  Wink

Finedon and Irthlingborough and very close together so maybe Mum was just a wee bit wrong with her info.
I know Wellingborough district seemed to cover a lot of places including Wymington which is really Bedfordshire but so close to Northants. In fact, if part of Wymington was classed as Northants, depending on what side of the road you lived on.

I wish I had thought of seeing if there was a Christening for Florence - could Knotting be covered by the Wellingboro Registration District?   Shocked

I looked through the Historical Directories on-line for 1914 - nothing in Knotting.  In finedon there is an arthur Robinson at the Mulso pub & a R Coles Robinson, farmer but the trade directories wont have an engine driver listed anyway.

Knotting could be covered by Wellingborough.......it's North Beds . I'm sure theres a way of finding out the registration districts for places but not sure what it is.
Robinsons such a common name - doesnt make the job easier but makes a change from Smith (My Grandads name..........lol)

Just had a look and there seems to be some info on Registration Districts on both Freebmd and Genuki.
Couldn't copy and paste link on here for some reason.

Looks like Knotting would have come under Bedfordshire

Mary Lou

I'll check to see if there is a christening for Florence in Knotting, next week, that should help and at least give us her mother's Christian name?  If she is not there ...well, you will need to get a birth certificate unless she turns up elsewhere

Not sure if this sheds any light but I've ben trawling around IGI and found the birth of Albert George W. Robinson b.1894 at Denton, Buckinghamshire -on Free bmd I found him as well. So, I'm wondering if he is the husband of Ethel R. Goosey (all be it the same Albert who maybe became known as George William)
If this is the case then at least Mum is half right in saying that Florence was a 'Goosey'.

Marylou

I looked up the christening for Florence c 1908 - no luck - well I looked up all the christenings in Knotting [Robinson/Goodey & Hale] from 1880s onwards:

1881: Fred Arthur, son of John & Ann HALE.
1893: Fred Wm Sydney, son of Sarah Elizabeth HALE [singlewoman]
1900: Chas Arthur to John George & Eliza Jane HALE
1903: Wm Jesse, son of Jn Geo & Eliza Jane HALE
1905: Geo Edward, son of Jn Geo & Eliza Jane HALE
1907: Edith Ellen, daughter of Jn Geo & Eliza Jane HALE
1908: Nellie, daughter of Fred Art & HALE
1911: Jesse Art, son of Jn Art & Ellen HALE
1911: Jn Rich, son of Jn Geo & Eliza Jane HALE
1913: Fred Ernest, son of Fred Art & Ellen HALE
1923: Marjorie Irene, daughter of Alfred John & Hortense [?] ROBINSON
1924:  Edward George, son of Albert & Ethel Rose Goosey.
1926: Albert Edward, son of Alfred John & Hortence [?] Hilda ROBINSON
1926:  Hortence [?] Viviene Rose, daughter of Edward & Ethel Rose GOOSEY.
1958: Susan Georgina, daughter of Jn George [mechanic]  & Alice Margaret HALE.

Electoral Register 1908:
John HALE Sr., is listed as an elector [dwelling house qualification]
John HALE Jr., also listed [dwelling house qualification]

Electoral Register 1933:
323: George Wm ROBINSON [R & O]
324: Ellen Sophia ROBINSON [RW & O]
293: Fred Art HALE [R & O]
294: Ellen HALE [RW & DW]
295: John George HALE [R & O]
296: Rose Ellen HALE [RW & DW]
297: Jesse Art HALE [R]
298: Jn Rich HALE [R & O]
299: Florence Ellen HALE [RW & DW]

In brackets are how they qualified to vote:
R = residency
O= occupation
RW = residency of husband
DW = occupation of husband

So, as Florence wasn't christened at Knotting but her parents were living there in 1933?

Florence's parents married in 1905 - her mother was Ellen Sophia BRACKLEY and the marriage is on the free BMD
3b 491] in the Oundle District of Northants/Bucks.

And there was a GOOSEY family living in Knotting in the 1920s too?  I wonder where they fit in   Grin

All the best

Cathy

Note: Albert Edward GOOSEY is listed as a ''shoe operative'' on his childrens christening entries.

Oh dear...........so my Florence wasn't a Goosey after all.Oh well, maybe there's a link somewhere via an uncle/aunt or someone.
At least it's tied up some loose ends for me.
Once again many thanks.

Just had another look through the above list.

John George Hale and Rose Ellen Hale..........the initials RW and DW next to her name ...........would this mean that she was married to John George Hale ?
It's another one of my Mum's tales passed on but I remember a lady called Rose who Mum said helped to bring up John Richard Hale after his mother, Eliza Jane Hale died in 1915.
Mum told me that Rose moved in with John George Hale as housekeep and later married him.
Never did find out Rose's surname.......I looked on the 1901 census when I first started doing my tree and found a Rose Ellen Brown but a contact I've since found who seemed to know my Dad very well and other people in the village seemed to think her name was Rose Smith.
Be interested to find out if these two are married and if so when. It would have been Knotting I would have thought.
Would solve  (or not) another one of Mum's tales.
