I should state my latest example of not being sure if I could post information to the grandson of an individual I had found.....exacly where the grandson expected him to be found.

The individual was listed, for the world to see in a Henderson Directory which is a public directory.  The information was all there including siblings and possible parents who also submitted their information to the Directory.   These people may still be alive and Rootschat discourages posts including living people. I understand their reasoning if individual have not already agreed to make their information public.

I just don't understand that if the person themselves was willing to put the information in a public reference why we are not allowed to post this non-confidential (as it is public) information.

Something not mentioned is that many villages have historians or record keepers.  They have copies of the records that have gone to record offices, and they keep contact details of anyone who is researching surnames from the village.  Then, with permission, they pass on the details to others who come along researching the same surname.  I have found over 200 living relatives - and we've had a massive reunion - using this method.

There has always been a confusion between tracing the Living and the dead. Genealogy website trace ancestors not descendent's.There are special websites for tracing the living,to put it in a nutshell genealogy websites go up not down Grin Grin

Hi again, ok, new to this, and can't find my way, how do I know if I've got a reply to my message? I just know I'm going to feel really daft (Scottish word) when I'm told how simple it is, saying sorry in advance. duh!

I knew the name of a second cousin and using Ancestry found her marriage and then children. Luckily through Genes I was able to find her and we are now in contact exchanging family news It was a lucky break through.

Hiya guys,

Another newbie here.  My Uncle Charlie was recently a subject on Heir Hunters. He changed his name to Karl Franz Eduardo von Eudeni.  I was on the programme ( aired in July 09 ) His past is very sketchy and I wanted to trace our history back even further ( Cullum ) I know that my recently found Cousin Ron has traced our history back to 1810, but I wanted to know is it worth me paying out for Ancestry.co.uk to try and go back further? Also, on that site or Genes Re-united, can you search for more than one branch of the family ie : Mothers side?
Many thanks

Steve
