The Royal Cross Cheaping
« on: Saturday 13 October 07 16:19 BST (UK) »

I wonder if anyone can help. I have a relative who in 1901 census was a licensed victualler at 'The Royal' Cross Cheaping. Not knowing the area I just wanted to know what and where it was. I tried Googling but to no avail. Thanks Sorcha

hi
cross cheaping is still in coventry.  its near to the west orchards shopping centre in the city centre.  i don't think its on a map but if you find bishop street, that then changes to the burges and then cross cheaping is at the top of the burges. Try this post code CV1 1HN in google maps.   i don't know of a public house called the royal though.

next time i'm in Coventry i'll have a look.  That area was bombed in the war 14/11/1940 and much of that area was destroyed although there are still some old buildings in that area.

I see from the 1901 that she was born abt.1856 in Sheffield, I wonder if she returned to Yorkshire,

Yes Daisy I think you re right, I found that reference too. I know at one time a niece and her half sister Tryphena! both went to Coventry and were married there. Maybe she went 'home to die' as it were. They were a really tragic family, she was one of 18, 11 of them dying before they reached adulthood! I wondered if it was still in business, if they would have any old photos. Sorcha

hi
if you go into the site there are about 6 pages of cross cheaping photos from different angles, would give you an idea what the area is/was like.  i like the man standing on the edge of the pavement, looks like he's waiting for a bus which is ironic as cross cheaping and the burges is now where a lot of buses pull up!

hi
yes grey friars ran off warwick lane.  i've got that many bookmarks for coventry i forgot about this one.

http://www.historiccoventry.co.uk/covmaps/allmaps.php

i notice you have timms in your tree, i do also one branch from new bilton in rugby, and a marriage of a flora spicer to a timms in coventry.

do your hadlands have a connection to warwickshire also, as i have a copy of the deeds for my house with some info about if i remember rightly a john hadland.

First many thanks that map site explains the situation perfectly.
My Timms are playing "hard to get" Elizabeth TIMMS was my 3X gt grandmother she married Joseph STANDLEY in 1819 in Warwick. She was bap in St Nicholas Warwick in 1801 daughter of Thomas TIMMS and Elizabeth DUNN I can't find any other children for them Elizabeth nee Dunn died in 1816 and Thomas married Fanny SMITH in 1819 and they had a son Samuel in 1820 he married a Hannah.
On the 1841 census Thomas was  a journeyman Mason about 60 his burial is recorded in St Nicholas 11 Aug 1846 age 69 giving a birth 1777 I can't find a suitable birth in Warwick(have had a good look several times in the RO a journey man took work where ever it could be found so it is possible that he originated out side Warwick Coventry isn't that far I think I need to look there next.
My HADLANDS are another awkward bunch  Grin
This time 4Xgt grandmother Jane Hadland m Martin GILES 1790 Bletchington Oxfordshire
She was one of 4 children of Richard and Mary nee WOODWARD who married in Kidlington Oxf in 1753 I have not found a birth for Richardnor have I seen the entry for his burial but he appears on another web site where his birth is given as 1721 but this gives a marriage age of 31 I need to take a closer look at this one, but I don't think they arelikely to be Warwickshire.
Please let me know if you trip over any of them

Oh my God Julie, if you look on the sign underneath where it says the Royal is her husbands name - W F Lane. I cant believe it. Thanks again. But that poses a problem, he was meant to have died in the Boer War! My GGrannie never got over it! Sorcha
