Passenger lists from Germany?
« on: Monday 15 October 07 16:48 BST (UK) »

I've no clues as to where my great-grandfather came from, except that he had a German sounding name. Presumably he (or his parents) arrived in the UK by ship.

Does anyone know whether passenger lists were kept of immigrants from Germany etc in the 19th century?  I haven't heard of any - but you learn something new all the time in this hobby!

Will be grateful for any help.
Thanks
Lesley

Hi LH,

the most well-known passenger lists are Hamburg "Link to your Roots"
http://www.linktoyourroots.com/
but that's to America

and Bremen
http://www.schiffslisten.de/index.php?lang=en
some British destinations but mainly further afield

The National Archives has some lists of ships for emigration and for immigration:
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/familyhistory/migration/
but not a lot.

Sorry,
Bob

Thanks Bob, I'll try the Archives - I've had no luck on the naturalization papers - I reckon my great-g was too poor to bother.

Thanks for your help
