« on: Sunday 14 October 07 13:19 BST (UK) »

Hi

This is a plea for help, if you live in Johannesburg, South Africa at this moment in time could you please contact me via PM.
I need to ask a great big favour of a fellow rootschatter in that city.

Hi Ken,
I've got one enquiry going for you already. Also I've just arranged a vist for an ex Gortonian who is here on holiday from Jo'berg so I'll try and enlist his help. there must be some RC's out there with the skills you need Smiley

Cheers

Hi EmPea

It's a bit long  Wink

Back in 1972 I moved aged 12 to Rhodesia with my parents, made friends with a group of drop outs "my kind of people  Grin " These were people you could call your very best mates.

Anyway in 1976 it was time to come back to the UK, and as lads do we wrote only a few times over a period of time then stopped altogether "as lads do".

As I got older and the internet developed I got this urge to find my friends again, so started to add my name to all the Rhodesia forum sites I could find, just hoping they would do they same.

By 2006 I had been a member of these forums for a few years and had only had one half lead email via an email via an email to someone I lived next door to, who by chance is Russell Tiffin an international cricket umpire now, but I never followed this line up.

Then on the 23/8/06 I got this email
Ken,

I really hope you will get back to me. Do you remember me. This could be a blast from the past. Do you have contact with Dave Boardman?
Hope to here from you soon
Your friend

Harry

The flow of emails went through the roof, Harry was now living in Jo'burg and was still in contact with another mate John in Oz. Our next task was to track down Dave, last known location was Canada, again rootchatters helped to try and locate him in Canada but to no avail. In the mean time I had sorted his family tree out (his dad was from Derby) re-found his half brother so life was sweet.

By now it was approaching Christmas 2006 and Harry told me he and his family were off into the bush for the Xmas period "it's as you do". But heard nothing from him for a couple of months, then had this bomb shell

Ken,John

Sorry I have been out of touch, but however I have suffered a terrible tragedy. My wife and two children were killed in a terrible car accident on the 28/12/2006. However please please send me Gordon’s E mail address. I tell you that between you and Ken I  am astounded as to how much Info you have given me that I have wondered about for so long. Ken just to let you know those birth certs Etc you raised for me got my late son his passport. From the bottom of my heart I thank you my friend. John please forward me all the details you can and do not bank on Rwanda calming down soon.

John & Ken love to your families

Cheers for now

Harry

Life after this did carry on for a few months in which time Dave was found living in Bermuda.

Harry seemed to be bearing up well, then the emails/phone calls just stopped in around April 07, I did manage to contact the company he worked for after a couple of months and was told he had left, I found his sisters email addy in Zimbabwe, she said she would contact him and get back to me, she never did return the message (have since found out that email system in Zim don't work very well)

All Harry's mates were now trying to locate him but with no luck, then a couple of months ago I found another email addy for who I suspected was his brother-in-law so I just had to send an email and ask the question. I got a reply on the day I put a Yahoooooo to this posting

It was his brother-in-law and apologized for the delay but he and Harry's sisters had just got back from a few months in Oz and gave me Harry's mobile number.

Rang him via skype the line was crystal clear, I could understand his heavy accent but he struggled with my Manc accent, but from his voice he was very poorly having had a heart attack and was due to go into hospital the next day, I could not speak to long to him as he said he was very tired and needed to have a sleep.

I dint know the complete story yet but praying he gets over this problem soon

So my thanks go out to all the rootschatters that have helped from all 4 points of the compass

Regards
Ken

PS
said it was long, and I have cut it down
