Wilkinson's of Heighington
« on: Monday 15 October 07 07:23 BST (UK) »

Hi
Does anybody have any further information on this particular family?
John Wilkinson born abt 1801 in Heighington and a shoemaker by trade.
He married Mary, also born abt 1801, (surname unknown) and had at least three children:
Frances born 1826
George born 1828
Thomas born 1831
Mary born 1836

George is my grandfather x3.  I have traced him and his family completely and have also done so with Thomas.
Can't trace Frances and after the 1841 census nor Mary after the 1851 census.
John & his wife can be traced through to the 1861 census and they appeared to of stayed in Heighington all their married life.

Could anybody confirm whether John's father was John Wilkinson born 1766 in Heighington?  His parent's were William Wilkinson and Mary North and John was the youngest of four children:
Margaret born 1749
Mary born 1754
Robert born 1756
All in Heighington.

Any help would be most appreciated!

Hi Sue

The first thing to do is to try to find the baptism for John b 1801.  During that time in Co Durham the baptism records showed the originating parishes of both parents.

Looking at the marriage indexes for the local parishes there are lots of Wilkinsons particularly in Auckland St Helen, so it is important to check his parents parish first.  If the English naming system were operating here I would say his parents were called Frances and George, and hers Thomas and Mary (or any combination thereof!)

I notice in 1861 he is stated as being born in 1794 rather than 1801.

I am interested in Thomas WILKINSON b Neasa(h)m Durham c 1820. From 1841 to 1891 he was  either living in or nextdoor to the household of Thomas COOPER b 1797 Hesleton, widower, cordwainer/ shoemaker of Sherburn, Durham. After 1841 Thomas WiLKINSON was a shoemaker and later an overseer for Thomas COOPER. He did not marry. I haven't found his parents or a baptism for him but in the 1891 Census his unmarried sister Margaret b c 1837 in Sherburn is in the same household.
Because Thomas WILKINSON was a shoemaker and was born only 9 miles from Heighington, there is a slight chance that he could be related to your family. If you ever come across a connection, would you mind letting me know.
In 1841, Thomas WILKINSON was one of three young men/servants living with the COOPER family, but they were probably apprentice shoemakers. The other two married COOPER daughters.
By chance, through my connection by marriage to the COOPER family, I have inherited a prayer book belonging to Thomas WILKINSON. A family tree probably begun by Thomas COOPER was included in the book.  So far, I haven't found a connection between Thomas WILKINSON and the COOPERS.
