Hi - if you want to find the place of birth of someone in France you are in for a hard search unless you are lucky - nothing is centralised.
The French system was that you went to the town hall in the place of the event + registered it. This should have been done in duplicate + the 2nd copy would be sent to the 'head town' in the departement or county - however this did not always happen - I found this to my cost when the entries I wanted were not in Montauban but only got as far as Caylus as the event was registered in a tiny village + not in the larger village of Caylus
BUT just a hint of the region they came from would help you. Have you got any photos, any family stories, any tiny clue. Did she keep her French passport? If she applied for a British 1 then you could try The National Archives. Did she travel abroad - try findmypast.com
http://www.findmypast.com/home.jsp
+ go to migration - it's marked at the top
What about the marriage cert - is there a place of origin - my great grandfather just put France but he did put the name of his father on the cert.

Your best  bet as far as France is concerned in my opinion is geneanet - this is a growing database rather like genesconnected + will email you when a new entry of 'your name' is added

I was lucky in that I had an old photo of a house in a village + a surname. I looked the surname up in the French equivalent of the telephone directory
http://www.infobel.com/en/france/
I then sent a letter in French with a copy of this photo to everyone in the area with the right surname, the local church + the Town Hall enclosing a (French) stamped addressed envelope back to me. I did get a reply as the house was recognised - I did find a distant relative - but it was hard work - you'll have to learn French!!

Hi - I'm sorry to be such a downer but with such little info the odds of you getting anywhere are very small. However if you read all the messages on this topic there are some suggestions.
Do try migration in findmypast.com - just by putting in the surname I found that my great grandparents had taken a boat to Marseille in 1927 - why - who knows - with the difficulty of tracing roots in France I can't find a sausage about his sister's husband as there is no marriage cert in Marseille where the kids were born nor in the town where she was born. Anything more recent than 100 years is covered by the privacy laws which makes things difficult
It's lateral thinking time - how about finding other descendants - 2nd cousins ec in the UK who may be able to give you a bit more info to go on???

1 of the few places where names are alphabetically listed is a site rather like genesreunited in that you upload your tree which then becomes searchable

http://www.geneanet.org/

there are a few de Capon's there - you never know you might strike lucky!

Hello

As I know you can obtain birth, mariage and death records from the "Archives
départémentales" but I think you cannot order it per email or letter, you have
to go there by yourself. Here are the addresses of these archives:

http://www.guide-genealogie.com/guide/archives_adresses.html

If you can't go there by yourself there are some volunteers who will search the
records and make copies of it for you. You will find them on the following website:

http://www.entraide-genealogique.org/

If you can't understand and write French, if you have something to translate, I can help you.

Best regards

You may post parts of the certificate, e.g. to confirm a name or address, but not the whole certificate.

Your actual photo q doesn't seem to have a 'reply' box so I am replying here

I see what you mean about origins - but a few suggestions - if either of the photos were taken in France then there should be the usual photographer info on the back
His occupation was postman - contact the postoffice - there is an online address fo this type of query - after all it's not even 100 years ago - you might find something there
http://postalheritage.org.uk/collections/archive/familyhistory/
There is is list of all employes - so it says - might give you a bit more info
They both gave the same address - this does not necessarily mean that they were living together - it was cheaper to give the same address as the banns would only have to be read in that parish. Having said that they chose to be married by banns which is a more 'middle class' thing to do unless it was a 'rush job' for some reason?
Look at the 1901 census
http://www.1901censusonline.com/search.asp?wci=person_search&page=search
Don't bother to pay  - just getting a result or no result is a help
and look at ook at migration on findmypast, com - they may have taken a boat - once again tho it's a pay site the info you get without paying can be just as helpful
Finally when she left him + went back to France do you know where they went??

Hi

I would go to Geneanet
http://www.geneanet.org/
It's rather like genesreunited in that it's searchable family trees put on by the likes of you + me. Email every contact that your search pulls out - write in French if poss - if not start the letter with
Bonjour (then put name) + then continue in English
What I wonder is tho - her + her father's name is not French but English
Freebmd seems to be stuck at the moment - I'd look for James (de) Capon's death between 1889 + 1911
But how do you know they were French - seriously - have you got any firm evidence of this - I ask this because I had always been told that I had Russian ancestors but when I found a very distant French relative he too had this same Russian photo + said it was simply taken on holiday in Russia - bang went my Russian blood!

The marriage certificate image has been removed - can you confirm the address of Janet at marriage and the names of the witnesses to the marriage?  Is she listed as an actress when she marries?

As Birtles says the first names don't sound French - if she was an actress I wonder if 'de Capon' might be a stage name?

On the birth certificates of her children, is she always listed as Janet Lillian de Capon? Does the spelling ever vary?

There are 'le Capon' families in Jersey, originating in France...

i agree the first names are not French type names ...maybe Jersey is a strong possiblity..

In France in those days you were not allowed to name your children with names that did not have a catholic Saints name as a first name.

i can help with French too but i am not french.
