Hello, I need to check up on the name of Dobson for Patrington. I have found a christening for Katherine DOBSON in the IGI: 18 September 1774 and she is the nearest candidate I could find to Catherine Dobson who I know is the mother of illegitimate son, William Dobson, born in Owthorne about 1802.
The parents of Katherine are noted on the IGI record as being John Dobson and Elizabeth.
I can't seem to locate Catherine in the early censuses at all or whether she got married after having William Dobson, thereby changing her surname.
I'm a bit stuck with finding out for sure which C(K?)atherine is the correct one and who her family was.
If anyone can give me details of any Dobsons from Patrington (village) especially an Isaac Dobson who was a witness at William's wedding in Tunstall (which would maybe give some clues), I would really appreciate it.
Thanks very much!
Jill

Hello Jill, Thank you for taking the time to look at the Patrington records at the Records Office!! I really appreciate your help!
It's hard to say if this is the correct C(K)atherine or not. The only thing that is promising is that the names of William, John, Mary and Anne were used in the generation of Dobsons that I do know about, but it could of course be coincidental as they were popular names.
There is another possible candidate listed on the IGI for Patrington:
CATHERINE DOBSON Birth: About 1761 Of, Patrington, Yorkshire, England
Unfortunately, there are no parents noted on the record. This particular Catherine would have been around 41 years old if she is the correct Catherine who had illegitimate son, William born in Owthorne.
I thought maybe the Isaac Dobson witness at William's wedding on 24 July 1822 in Tunstall would give a clue to the family, but I cannot seem to find him in the censuses, though he might have been possibly dead by 1841. I cannot seem to find a 'local' Isaac Dobson who would have lived in the Tunstall, Owthorne, Roos, Patrington area either!
I'm not sure if I ever will be able to find the identity of the correct Catherine.
Thanks again for your help with this,
Jill
