John Armitage Marriage - Ealing 1827
« on: Tuesday 16 October 07 14:11 BST (UK) »

Try Again!
I believe John Armitage & Sarah Shackle to be the parents of James Armitage plus siblings.
John & Sarah married 19 August 1827 in Ealing.

PLEASE - can anyone tell me the names of their parents and help me to go any further back on this line.

John Armitage is my wife's 3rd Great Grandfather.

Annoying thing is that when we lived in Brentford many years ago we had no interest in Family History and so never made use of any of the local data available!

Thanks in advance to all for looking and holefully helping.

Hi Mike

Not a lot to add on the marriage but bear with me on this....

John Armitage Bachelor married Sarah Shackle Spinster at St Mary's Ealing, 19th August 1827. He signed his name, she left her mark.

Their witnesses were Sarah Langston (x) her mark and Chas Atlee. His signature is all over the register, must have been the 'professional' witness.

Then I took a chance on the filmed baptism registers, but I was running short of time and the first one I looked at had the following

1803 Aug 21 Thomas Shackell s of Robert and Charlotte born July 31

1805 Dec 1 Sarah Shackle d of Robert dec'd and Charlotte born Nov 12

The burial register for late 1805 showed nothing for Robert so I don't know where is is buried at the moment.

I also didn't get the chance to look at earlier registers to see if there were any other possible siblings.

So now there's a dilemma...

The LMA is closing next week until January for a refurb so I can't look again for you until after Christmas and the Central library in Ealing where records are also kept is still shut for a major refurb which is seriously behind schedule because of very large cracks in the walls.

So I'm sorry if I have tantalised you with some information but not enough  Wink

OOh Dawn!

You really do know how to tease a fella don't you!

But seriously, many thanks indeed for some terrific input!!!

From the census I had her as born circa 1807, so November 1805 is certainly within the bounds of acceptability I think.

That being the case we have her parents as Robert & Charlotte which is a definite step forward.

Checking IGI gives Marriage of Robert Shackell (c1772) & Charlotte Langsdon (c1776), 20 Feb 1797 in Ealing.

Unfortunately though no further information on either of them or any of their children.

Thanks again Dawn for some very valuable information,

Dawn,

I've just found Sarah's death, Dec Qtr, 1869 - age 64.

1869 - 64 = 1805 !!

Seems to clinch it to me!!

Thanks again.

Hi Mike

Glad I've been of some use today.

It would appear from your posting that the Langton/Langsdon name could do with some further investigation as well as more children Shackell/Shackle children between 1797 and 1803.

I'll keep these notes on file and keep you posted on any further finds.

Hi Mike

Long time, no write!

The LMA has re-opened, but Ealing Library is still closed, June has been suggested for a re-opening date but after all this time and the fiasco I won't hold my breath.

Have you discovered anything in the meantime or do you still require more help with this family?

I'll be there every Thursday until late March so if you need anything let me know.

Hi Dawn,

Many thanks for remembering me - much appreciated!

Also more helpful than you realise; I had a major system crash a couple of months ago and then discovered that the wonderful Windows Vista backup wasn't recognising Family Tree Maker & Gedcom files so hadn't backed them up!!

The air was more than a little blue I can tell you.  Luckily the whole system backup about 6 weeks old had captured these files and I recovered more as I had luckily uploaded to Genes Reunited a week or so previously.

But I am still finding about things that I had lost (if you understand me?) your note reminded me to look at this area and sure enough a lot of the data above had been lost and I had forgotten to refer to it again (I was a tad busy trying to rebuild the whole system at the time!!).

Anyway, back to business - YES PLEASE any help VERY much appreciated.

I'll reenter what we have so far and See where it gets us then come back to you with specifics if that's OK please?

Thanks again,,

Mike
