WANTED Generations 4.2 Deluxe
« on: Friday 24 December 04 09:48 UTC (UK) »

THANKS EVERYONE, I THINK I'VE FOUND A COPY IN THE UNITED STATES !
7 January 2005

Does anyone have an unwanted copy of the family tree software GENERATIONS 4.2 deluxe ?
I need to transfer my family tree from Europress Family Tree software as it is getting too big (!).
Please send me a personal message if you have a copy you would be willing to pass on/ sell.
Please note it has to be version 4.2 as later versions cannot read my records.

Thanks and happy Christmas everyone.

Hi -

I am also using an old (circa 1997) Europress Family Tree programme - and have reached the limit of the files size.  Although I have invented a 'fix' by splitting my tree into 4 separate files (one for each family branch), it is a nuisance.  I thought the software was no longer made - and it was not possible to export the data into any other version or programme?  (It's not compatible with Gedcom and Reunion is no longer produced, is it?)

I really don't want to key 750 individuals in again!  Cry

Have you been successful in copying file data across to Generations 4.2 - and if so, do you know where I can get a copy of the software?

Hi Mike

The quick answer is yes.  Cheesy

Europress Family Tree has an export function in the File Menu. This creates an 'rtx' type file for export, but this can only be read by Generations software. Once you get hold of a Generations disk, copy the new rcx file from your family folder on Family tree to your family folder on Generations (in Windows Explorer). Then run Generations, don't open any family file -cancel -and use the Convert transfer file option to open your rtx. All your data will go across successfully and in the same formats. The only manual change you will have to do is to tell the new software where your picture directory is.
The two softwares are related and use the same drivers - so be warned that if you try to run both of them at the same time you will have problems. Running them separately is fine.

I got Generations Easy Family Tree from Sierra on eBay from the States, whcih was very cheap. BUT this is a light version and has no chart tools. So if you can get a full version,  please let me know if it includes charting !
The reason I went for 4.2/ 4.0 is I saw advice on web on data transfer working in this version. I don't know if later versions can open rtx files. Can anybody advise ?

I have version 8 gathering dust on a shelf ... the manual does not mention rtx files and refers to "generations" own format and gedcom import/export.

Almost forgot to say it does inclusde a charting facility (easychart)

Thanks Falkryn,
Have read on the internet that only Generations versions 4.x will take rtx files. Later versions can upgrade from Generations 4 but not from Europress Family Tree direct.
thanks for check on Easy chart.
