Hello;

Re: Isabella Mowat > I have George Grieve (1731-1809) married Rebecca Malcolm (1737-1833) who had Isabella Grieve (1777-1861).  She married John Mowatt Jan, 12, 1801 in Bervie.  Is this the Isabella you refer to?

Yes this is her, now that you bring this to my attention. I did not know her parents names!
Thank you for them.

Hi Isles,
Many thanks for the McBay Family Tree you sent me,I will be digesting all the data with great interest over the coming weeks and include it into my tree in due course. I had heard stories of the McBay's on the lifeboats and some tragic accidents involving them. You mention a book by Roy Souter "Wild and Rocky Coast" is it available for purchase and if so where can I obtain a copy of it? Edward was my 4xGrt.Uncle.
Once again I really do appreciate the time and effort you have given me and I look forward to many more "conversations" .
Regards

Spotted my grt grandmothers name HELEN FINDLATER on lyndyloo6 's reply .According to Robert McBeys marriage cert his father was reputed to be Robert McBey Postman and this is where I stick.I have found a R Mc (postal worker) on a census from Boharm, about the right age,but is he the right one ?
Robert Findlater McBey died in 1905 when my grandfather was 3years old .My Grandad was also Robert McBey.
Has anyone come across James McBain,(father Farquhar McBain) who was also supposedly an older son of the unmarried Miss Findlater?

Hi there

My name is Kevin McBay

I am crew member of the Montrose Lifeboat. I have been asked about the late James McBay who died aboard the Johnshaven lifeboat by the station mechanic.

I didnt know anything about this until i did a quick google search and came across this thread.

The RNLI are preparing a memorial in memory of RNLI crew who were lost while crewing the boats. I am unsure of the details.

Foggy, could you please contact the station in Montrose? The number can be gained from the directory enquiries. If you get stuck i will keep an eye on this thread

I dont want to post details in the thread in case it is not allowed?

Hi Kevin, and welcome to Rootschat.

Could you let me/us know as I am sure that some of us may have relatives and it is nice to know these things.  I know that both sides of my family, Welsh and MacDonald both sailed out of Montrose.

Regards,
Lynda

Hi,
Icey: I have sent you a couple of PMs re:James McBay and we need to make contact.

AliMc: I am very interested in Your Robert McBay/McBey's as I have several Robert's who appear in my research of this line that I am not able to establish their parents, mainly fishermen/RNLI/coastguards/Merchant Navy in Kincardineshire and migrating down to Sunderland/Newcastle and the north east coast of England.
My McBay/Bey's originate from Broadhyth/Rathven,Bannfshire,Scotland back in the early 1700s and may have returned from Ireland.

Just to make things more complicated another cousin has done some research and says that Robert McBey (postal worker) can't have been our grt grt grandfather because where he lived at the 1871 census was too far away from where Helen Findlater lived with her son Robert McBey Findlater, our grt grandfather (reputed father RMc postman)and she may have just picked a name out of the air!! I am not so sure but am stuck in Bristol too far away to see for myself.Oh,and my Grandfather ,Robert McBey married a Mearns

Hi,
I have 17 Roberts in my tree,4 Mearns and no Findlater.
The three you mention, are you able to tell me where and when they were born? This may help me to establish some connections, Like you, I live in Surrey and find it difficult to do the research on original documents, but I have several connections in Scotland through Genes Reunited to which I also subscribe to. All the McBay/Bey's around the Johnshaven area I believe are connected. The Blues(and name variations) and McBay's were very prominent around the parish of Benholm and St.Cyrus from the mid 1700's Smiley
