Hi
I am researching my Dad's father's family - The Horsley's. I now have some confusion over where one of my ancestors was born.
I am tracing William Horsley born approx 1828, married to Sarah. I found him on the 1871 census and traced back but he is confusing me with his birthplace as it changes slightly on each census.
On the 1891 census he describes his birth place as Oxford. On the 1881 census he states what I think says "Berks" and Radley On the 1871 census he states just Berks On the 1861 census he states just Berks On the 1851 census he states Oxon - Radley
On the 1841 census I think I found him with his parents, the entry is from "Ratley" which I believe may be in Berkshire or Oxfordhsire. William is listed aged 11 (the right age).
His wife Sarah appears on the 1851 - 1881 entries as being born in Holloway which is correct so it must be the same William.
I just wanted to make sure so I could be sure that this 1841 for Ratley is him, If it is it means I have found his parents Daniel and Hannah Horsley.
Anyone here have any knowledge of Ratley or Radley and why every 10 years it changed from Ratley to Oxon, to Berks and then Radley. Anyone have any knowledge of whether these towns are near the border of Oxon and Berks?
Some local knowledge may help here, maybe back then he got confused as it was near both counties.
Thanks. dinks

Radley was in Berkshire for centuries until 1974 when it moved to Oxfordshire.

Hi
Thanks for the replies. The census for 1841 clearly says Ratley, but William always states Berks, Oxford or Radley on the census records.
Maybe the 1841 entry isn't him but I can't believe there was another William Horsley born in Berks/Oxford/Radley area in the same year.
The next confusing thing is there is a place called Ratley just north of Banbury. I know Banbury is in Oxon as I have family there, but on the Google map it states Warwickshire.
I am very confused as to why he would be on a Ratley census in 1841 but always refer to his birthplace as Berkshire or Radley. Mind you he also said Oxon and just oxford so he could mean Ratley.
What do you all think? Do you think it's the same William Horsley and over the years the Ratley/Radley thing got confused?
To be sure I would have to get his birth certificate but that is before records in 1828/1829. I don't drive so getting to Ratley to find records would be hard.
Would I go to Ratley or Radley - decisions!

Ratley is and has always been in Warwickshire. The nearest large town is Banbury which is as you say in Oxfordshire (Oxon for short) and today it has an Oxford post code.
Your profile doesn't give any indication of where in the world you live and so I don't know how well you know the area.

Hi
I don't live in the area, I live in Hertfordshire. I don't know much about the area at all.
I have come to the conclusion that the William Horsley I found from Ratley might not be him and I have asked the Berkshire Look Up Offers board if someone would look to find his birth in Radley, Berks.
Thanks dinks
