Elkin family in Cheadle area
« on: Saturday 20 October 07 18:16 BST (UK) »

I have a marriage certificate which states that Phyllis Elkin married in Gateshead at 20 in January 1936. She was the daughter of Charles Vincent Elkin born in Cheadle in 1889. He was a journeyman baker who worked for the groom's father, a Master Baker. The Elkin family lived in 1936 at 7 Raeburn Gardens, Gateshead, Durham. I cannot trace Phyllis' birth in the Durham or Stafford areas in 1915 or 1916. There is another Phyllis Marjorie Elkin who married in Stafford in 1938 William Lycett, but I cannot trace the Phyllis who came from Stafford and married in Gateshead, Durham. If anyone can throw light on this Phyllis I should like to buy her birth certificate when she is traced.

Yes, I did see the marriage between Charles Vincent Elkin and Lettice Ann Parkinson in Blackburn, but there is still no sign of a daugther Phyllis. There are Elkins born after 1908 in Blackburn but not Phyllis, who was born in 1915 or 1916. It is puzzling.

Alf,
I think your Phyllis Marjorie Elkin who was born to Hannah Betts in 1916 must be a different person. She married William Lycett in Stafford as a spinster of 22 in 1938, whereas the Phyllis I am looking for married as a spinster of 20 in 1936 in Gateshead, Durham.

Good question, Alf, and the answer is: T.J. Paterson who is the father of the groom and a Master Baker, and A.E. Elkin who I am sure is the youngest uncle of the bride.
I appreciate your continued interest as I have just trawled through www.findmypast.com for four years but have not found the birth of the bride.
Let me know the thinking behind your question and now on the answer.

Hi Alex

The reason I asked who was the witneses. That some times a sibling may have signed the register, which will give another name to look for and hopfully born after 1911 which would have shown the mothers maiden name.  Like you I have searched and no signe of her any where, Even tried varients Ekin Ekins and so on. Not even her father has shown up except for the marriage you know about.

Just one long shot. Has Phyllis passed away if so when. That will show her birth date, I have found one Phyllis Paterson died 2003 in Birkenhead  aged 87. DOB
7 April 1916.

Alf,
You are quite right, but I have already noted the death you mentioned. There is no certainty that it is the right one, but you have hit on a vital point. Am I right in thinking that death certificates give place of birth? Do you know if it is straightforward to ask to check a recent death record if the precise date is given?
The father's record is known outside the marriage in 1908. He is listed as born in Cheadle in 1889 and is on the census.
You are right about the significance of 1911 births, but it is surprising that there are no Elkin births under the mother's name of Parkinson. Perhaps they were born in Scotland or abroad?

Hi Alex

She is a mystery, Phyllis, I wonder if she gave her full name and correct age at her wedding. For example I had an aunty who got married as Peg Beards, real name Margaret Elizabeth Beard, she liked the name Peg.

On death certs it will show date and place of birth. Unless you can check the death record yourself as far as I am aware they will not do a search for you. but you can buy the cert on line.

You may be correct her parents may have moved to Scotland that will indicate that not other children have been found, Elkin=Paterson.

Out of interest did she state on the marriage cert that her father was dead.
He died June quarter 1935  in Gateshead aged 45 his wife Lettice A, died  March quarter 1949 in Darwin aged 61. At least it is the correct parents.

She will be found at some stage

Alf

Yes, Alf, the certificate does state that Charles was deceased at the time of his daughter's marriage. You are right about the death dates.
I hope your optimism is vindicated. I agree I think she will be found.
