Hallo mayday,

There are three items you require when searching for Irish ancestors.

1. Denomination.
2. Parish
3. Townland.

You'll have to rely on Church records as civil registration in Ireland was not introduced until 1864. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.

Hi mayday,

I entered O'H in the chart on failteromhat.com/griffiths.php to have a look at the extracts of Griffith's Valuation. There are no families named O'Hay listed as being in Ireland between 1848-64.

Hi

Back to the drawing board then! What I might do is get one of the sons birth certificate  'Johannes' who was born in Liverpool. (Eldest was born in Dublin). Always led to believe spelling was O'Hay but may be slightly different on  'Johannes'birth certificate and hopefully move back from that.

Entering "hay" on failteromhat.com/griffiths.php produces families named Hay and O'Hayer.

O Hea (Hay/Haye)

According to 'Keatings History' the name is found in Carberry where the family served as chiefs of  'Pobble O Hea.
The family is centered in the 17th century in Glenn-a-Rouska and this is the Desmond line of the family.
The family is also found in West Barry-Roe in 1720 and in the latter 19th century in Woodfield and Keelrovanne in Lasavaird Clonakilty.
Also in Bullerstown Bandon.

Yes there is a Hay family living in Athlone--Griffith's Valuation has a William Hay listed in the parish of St Mary's (this area --- as you leave Athlone down by the Barracks & Railway station.)it looks as if he is renting two places one in Victoria Place & one in Hatter's Lane (which they say is of Victor Place)Cheers Nipy
