Lucky Black Cat ???

Hi everyone,
I have found a family of 'mine' John Smith and Susan Elwood both born in Little Gransden who married in 1852 (his first marriage) and produced six children before 1862 of whom four died before the age of one year.
I wonder if anyone knows whether there was a particular illness ie. whooping cough, measles.... sweeping through the county or was it just that they were an impoverished family.
The mother Susan died in 1864 aged thirty.
Any opinions would be welcome, Thank you, Abiam

If they died over a period of years, as your post suggests, then it doesn't sound like an epidemic sweeping the county. More likely your alternative suggestion, general malnutrition so they succumbed to anything going round. I have ancestors from neighbouring Gt Gransden who had loads of children in the 1850s and none of them died young.
Didn't we just exchange messages about this family on that other board?
Regards
David

Yes David we did. I just wondered if anyone on here had any views! It does sound like general poor quality of life and as you say it is over quite a long period. Thanks for your repy, Abiam

Hi David,
Am I right in thinking you have access to the Parish Registers for the Gransden villages?
I am looking to find out the maiden name of Jane Smith wife of Samuel Smith (born Jul 1794 Little Gransden). I believe you found her death for me which was 1835 in Little Gransden. They were my Great, Great Grandparents and had four sons.
Any help or suggestions to find Jane and Samuel and their ancestors would be much appreciated,
Regards, Abiam

Hi Abiam
Afraid not, just the bits that are on the BVRI, NBI or Hunts Marriage Index, or on the FFHS pay per view site. And unfortunately Lt Gransden marriages for that period are not on any of my CDroms. You need someone with the transcript.
Looking again at your Susan Elwood who married John Smith in 1852- was she a daughter of Samuel and Mary (Childerley) Elwood? If so I have her in my database although I have no relationship with her, but her mother remarried to John Medlock, to whom I am very distantly connected.
Regards
David

Hi David,
Thanks for your reply.
As Susan Ellwood was the first wife of John Smith I didn't follow her through because my relative was from his second wife.
I have just this morning found a tree on the webb for a possible link to Jane ? Smith. Jane Hullier - if and it's a big if she married the right Samuel Smith. I have sent a hopeful email.

I have added it here in case it might be of any use to you, probably not but you never know!

It's always useful to have extra information, thank you. I had also decided on poor living conditions as the major factor, Regards, Abiam
