I shall be in Kirkby Stephen next week if you want photographs etc.  My husband's ancestor was vicar there for many years and we still have relatives in the area.
If you have not yet looked at the IGI on www.familysearch.org it would be well worth doing.  I also have Kirkby Stephen at Work a historical directory 1780-1905.

Dear Frederickay (Jan)
Many thanks for your reply to my post re the Atkinson family.
This is the information which i have at the present time,
John Atkinson married Elizabeth Hodgson c1800 place unknown poss Kirkby Stephen
As far as we know they had 6 children Mary 07/02/1802, Ann 01/071804, Elizabeth 1806? Thomas 19/6/1808, Kirkby Stephen, Robert 1811 in Ravenstonedale. plus one other, name unknown.
They left for Toronto Canada from Liverpool in 1833, Mary was now married to a Thomas Brunskill, (date and place for marriage not known) Possibly Kirkby Stephen along with Mary's parents and 6 children, three died on the voyage.
And this is all the information i have at the present time of writing.
Kind regards,

Dear Sillgen, Andrea,
Many thanks for your kind offer regarding photos Kirkby Stephen.  At the present time of writing we do not know where they where buried and i would not ask you to go on a wild goose chase searching for something that may not be there.
Hopefully i may get more information from Canada which may pin this information down, fingers crossed.
Thanking you once again,

Hi,

I was just browsing and the name Atkinson leapt off the page at me!
I need to track down the parents of Mary Atkinson born in 1865 in Allithwaite, Lancs. She married Charles William Jones (b. 1865) in Sept 1884 in Kendal, Westmorland.
I don't know of any Siblings for Mary, but she had 8 children with Charles, named Christopher, Isabella, Charles, Ernest, Sidney, Harry, Leslie and Rhoda. (All born in Kendal).
Looking at the dates for these Atkinsons, i wondered whether my Mary may be connected in some way as a Granddaughter perhaps???
I would be very grateful for any help in tracking down Mary's ancestors.
Thank you, regards, Erica.

Hi Erica
Atkinson is such a common name in this area that you will have to get the marriage certificate to be sure of her father's name and occupation.  Otherwise you could spend ages chasing the wrong line.

hi frederickay here . i have a post further down .i am a kirkby Stephan Wharton . well my forebears were . have been there and if you ever get the chance grab it . have a look on the Wharton .Kirby Stephan ..=goggle . the Atkinson's married into the family and is a very common name in area . also try to get someone to find the historical society number for you . it is a small town ..lovely with macaws flying over the chimney pots(very unusual,in n.z. a macaw would be about 2000 dollars so to see a sth American bird flying around chilly north england sticks in ones mind ) but i have found that my Wharton's haven't really moved so you might be lucky enough to find the same . private message me if you like and i will go thru my paperwork . bye
Jan
p.s never mind the fog coming in at dusk and the crows cawing . all very atmospheric. i love the place.....
