I like the thinking re Mary Wooding, but against the theory is the registration district is wrong and also there's a Mary Wooding aged 3 in Turvey in 1871, which may well be her.
Whilst it's inconsistent with her two siblings, and with the baptism that Pete found, what if she was registered as if Eliza was married, under her alleged father's name? I know, almost impossible to find, and it would cost a fortune in birth certificates. No, I don't buy that theory!

Thank you everyone for your help, it has given me a lot to think about. I had already ordered the birth certs for Mary Anns brother & sister, still awaiting their arrival. On Mary Anns marriage cert her father is named as James Wootton (deceased) - occupation bird stuffer - how fascinating is that! I did know that her mother remarried to James Dilley.
Thank you again Chris

You know that Eliza married James Dilley. Only the marriage cert will show if it was a REmarriage - but the IGI 1874 marriage entry (extracted from the parish register, so reliable) gives her father as Thomas Wootton, so it doesn't look like a remarriage.
All the evidence points to her three Wootton children as being illegitimate, but the awaited birth certificates will confirm that, or otherwise
I think Mary Ann had a vivid imagination!
