Could someone help me please?
« on: Tuesday 23 October 07 16:22 BST (UK) »

I am a bit puzzled with my ancestors, the (O)Neills.
I believe that George Andrew Neills father was Jeremiah O Neill born in Ireland. I have the details from the 1871 census, and they are living in the same house, 5 cromer street, as the girl's family who George married Elizabeth Giles. The dates all fit. George was born in Hampshire. I find him on the 1881 census living in 55 cromer street with his wife elizabeth. Jeremiah is still living in 5 cromer street. However George is now just Neill, and all the records are have of him are Neill too. Also on his marriage certificate in 1874 his father is given as Henry Neill.
Have I totally lost the plot, or is it possible George was trying to hide his Irish descent?
Any help would really be appreciated.
Thanks
Amanda

so in 1881 at RG11; Piece: 191; Folio: 61; Page: 13

George Neill is b 1852 hampshire.

it wasn't uncommon to 'drop' the O' bit.

JUN QTR 1853 basingstoke. O'neil, Andrew George.

That could well fit as on his marriage certificate he is stated as Andrew George rather than George Andrew

Yes I think that is them too. Still Not sure why he put Henry as his father on his marriage cert. It looks like he has a brother named Henry. Unless he was present and mistaken for his father?
