Hi,

Is there an address on the marriage cert, and what were the names of the witnesses?

There was a Thomas Eliff, married to Elizabeth Shepherd in Leeds, Mar 1862, and a death of Thomas Eliff in Kirkstall (Leeds area)  Mar 1869, aged 32, possible brother?

Off to look some more Roll Eyes

hi
in leeds between 1860 and 1872 there were 3 marriages for eliff. ellen wed richard shepherd, thomas wed elizabeth shepherd and my marriage. thomas died 1869 there was also a death for a james eliff same quarter, there is a james eliff with a thomas eliff on the 1861 census living with mother mary. mary was married to a thomas eliff at one time. these people were all born in ireland. ellen is easy to follow through the census so is mary the mother. everywhere else you find an eliff they are hard to follow through the census.
it looks like susan carter and joseph mellor are the witness's, i havnt been able to find these people either. in 1872 when they got married they where living in wellington st in leeds. by the 1881 census they had moved to ackton. before this edward was in e yorks
they then moved to castleford.
there are eliffs in lincolnshire that fit, but they are not the same family.

regards
martyn

Hi,
Phew........Mary is certainly proving to be elusive prior to her marriage, which makes me wonder if she was actually born in Hull, or she is living under a stepfather's name etc.
It is a shame that there was no relationship for James to Thomas on that 1861 census, they do seem to be likely candidates for Mary's family but James was born c1847 and in Ireland Huh
Joseph Mellor (Nellor on ancestry) is living at 176 Wellington Street on the 1871 census, his occupation is Weaver & Parish Clerk, not sure about Susan Carter yet, found one married to Thomas (maiden name was Russell), but no obvious connection.
You mentioned that Mary the one from Ireland was easy to follow through the censuses; does this include the 1851, as I cannot find her then?
If all else fails, I am hoping to go to Leeds Archives sometime in the future, I could have a look at the marriages for Ellen and Thomas and see whom they name as their father and occupation.
Regards,
Kath

hi
well you found one of the witness's for me. i see he has boarders in the house in 1871. i looked for him in 1881 and he is with his son in derbyshire. it shows his son as a railway guard, which is what it says edward was on his wed cert. maybe edward knew the son and he got him somewhere to live, with joseph mellor been a parish clerk he would have been handy also has a witness. i dont think edward would have known anyone in leeds. there where non of his close family there at the time. the wedding you found for susan carter i had seen aswell. i tried to follow her but didnt recognise any names in her family that could match. i looked right through wellington st in 1871 and didnt recognise anyone who was living there.
it would be nice if they did an electrol role in 1871/1872.
i couldnt find any of the eliff family in 1851.
ellen eliff's son was born in howden in 1865 which is where edwards family came from.
sorry its a bit messy but as you have found out its a messy search

thanks

Hi Martyn,

There are copies of the parish records for St Peters Church, Leeds in the archive office at my mums home town.............. so sweet talked her into having a look for me, she has managed to look at the marriage between John Eliff to Esther Cross in 1841 and John was living in Kirkgate, he is a civil engineer and his father was William Eliff, a farmer.  So no clues there.

Mum is going back tomorrow to look at the marriage in 1862 between Thomas Eliff and Elizabeth Shepherd, as she ran out of time today, lets hope that one yields some clues, will let you know tomorrow.

Hi Martyn,

Thomas Eliff, age 29, Bachelor, Occupation gardener, residing at Cloth Street, father named as Thomas Eliff, Labourer married Elizabeth Shepherd, age 40, Spinster, residing at Lodge Street, father named as William Shepherd, Cordwiner on the 25 February 1862.

The witnesses were Mary Shepherd and unfortunately mum couldn't make out the second signature, but it was James Huh?h(r)ouse.

It is a shame that the father Thomas wasn't listed as a gardener.

hi kath
thanks to you and your mum for doing that for me. i dont know where to go from here. the names are matching up but the occupations arn't. i think the witness's might be the way to go. joseph mellor helped and if i found susan carter im sure it would help aswell.
