« on: Sunday 26 December 04 23:08 GMT (UK) »

Hi, could sks lookup a George Bryant born in Gloucestershire, age about 2yrs in 1871. Father, Thomas Bryant. Mother,  Lucy. Siblings, Clara, Thomas Henry, Thomas Edward. Bit of a mystery here the 1881 has these guys born in Birmingham, but I'm sure thats wrong. Any help much appreciated.
Cheers.

Hello!   Smiley

There are George BRYANTs in Gloucestershire about the right age, but no exact matches.  Don't know the ages of siblings, but presume you expected to find them in 1871 too?  Best approximation:

Thomas aged 42
Merel wife aged 38
Elizabeth
Doras
Clara
Thomas
George  all at Clearwell, Newland, Gloucestershire

Can get more detail if you think this is worth pursuing?  Tried other counties without success.  Where were other family members born, do you know?

Regards, Sue

Hi Sue,
That's very interesting, there is a married daughter living with the widowed Thomas in 1891 named Elizabeth. Here's the approximate 1871 age and birthplace from some later census.
Thomas-41/42-Gloucs
Lucy-wife-38-B'ham??
Elizabeth-daughter-15-Wiltshire
Clara Jane-daughter-7-Wiltshire and Gloucs apparently
Thomas Henry-son-4-Gloucs
Thomas Edward-son-3-B'ham??
George-son-2-Gloucs
Lucy and Thomas Edward only appear in the 1881 and as I stated in my original post I think the birthplace for all is a mistake.
The wife Merel, I wonder could it be a first marriage?, and Doras (or is it Doris) maybe she had left home by 1881.
There are some differences but enough similiarities to be worth pursuing further. I would like to see what else you can dig up on these guys please.
Thanks ever so much

Hi Greg, How is BC?? (I'm envious!!)

RG10/5298 F113 Pages10 & 11

Thomas BRYANT 42 H M Labourer at pit, born Somerset, Kingswood
Merel BRYANT 38 W M ,born Wiltshire, Littleton Drew
Elizabeth 15 Dau U scholar, born Wiltshire, Luckington
Doras 10 Dau ,born Wiltshire, Luckington
Clara 8 Dau, born Wiltshire, Luckington
Thomas 4 son, born Gloucestershire, Newland
George 2 son, born ditto

Address Marsh Lane, Clearwell, Newland

Notes:
1. Merel's name is very difficult to read.  It could conceivably be Mercy, but not Lucy (the M is clear)
2. There are several Kingswoods, one is just north of Merel's place of birth near Wotton under Edge, but the more likely is now part of Bristol & was then Somerset
3. Doras could be Dorcas, but not Doris
4. Agree it is likely there was a second marriage, maybe to someone who already had a son Thomas, hence the need to differentiate by middle names??
5. I could find no other reference to Merel, so I guess it is a mistranscription of some sort

Hope this helps

Sue

Hi Sue, this part of BC is cold right now at -20c. But as is usual when it's this cold we have beautiful blue skies with lots of sunshine, At the moment there's a temperature inversion so it's warmer on top of the mountains and I had a wonderful day ski-ing yesterday. Life is good, but tomorrow I have to go back to work.

Well I think you hit the jackpot for me with this family.
I found a Mercy Bryant (age close enough) who died in1873, registered in the Monmouth district which includes part of Gloucs. Also a marriage (maybe) of Thomas Bryant to a Lucy Evans in 1875 Monmouth too.
There's an unmarried Doras Bryant, in 1881, boarding with a family in B'ham along with her 3 yr old son Wm Bryant, who's birthplace is a B'ham workhouse. A family skeleton perhaps. In 1883 Doras may have married a Thomas Halford in B'ham. Because in 1891 there's a Thomas and Doras with their 4 kids including William. Doras can't be a very common name can it.
Next, Clara Bryant in one census is born in Luckington and Thomas and George are both from Gloucs.
Ages are close and birthplaces match perfectly.

I think there are just too many matches here for this not to be my family and I can't thank you enough for finding them.

All the best,
Greg
