Hi
Without a surname it would be absolutely impossible to know which was the correct entry. Mary Elizabeth were very common christian names as were Mary A (probably Ann)
Presumably Joseph Dobson and Mary A married at sometime. If you are unable to trace their marriage - they did have other children?
A copy of one of those childrens birth certs will give you Mary's maiden name

Hi jsm, Looking at the 1881 census, your Mary E Dobson gives her birth place as , Lancaster, Dalton. maybe it is the Dalton in Lancashire a township of Burton-in-Kendal, which is about 4 miles from her mothers birthplace of Milnthorpe.

Hi jsm, Yesterday I visited the record office/archive at Barrow-in-Furness, I checked through the baptism records for Dalton-in-Furness;- there is no baptism record of a Mary Elizabeth Dobson or a Mary E …[with any other surname] checked through the years 1869 to 1873 .

Hi,
I notice from one of your earlier messages, that the GRO were unable to find a birth registration entry nor could a baptism entry be found for Mary E.
Looking at the 1881 census and Joseph's occupation as a miner, it reminded me of my own relatives who were Iron Ore Miners in Dalton in Furness.
I then searched freebmd and found a registration for Elizabeth Mary Dobson, Ulverston district, Sep 1872. Could this be your missing relative (if you consider reversing the Christian names) aged 9 in 1881?
This does not help with finding the marriage, but it may confirm her mother's maiden name if you obtained the certificate (but you may not need to now)?
It was just a thought!
Regards
Chris

Does anyone recognise this man?

Welcome to Rootschat Chris.
Some of my ancestors were iron ore miners in Dalton in Furness too. I've often wondered if it was just money that took them from their jobs as ag labs, to become miners.
