Surname interests
« on: Sunday 26 December 04 23:27 UTC (UK) »

I am interested in the following families from Perth:

BARTY (1760 to 1840)
BROWNHILL(S) (1750 to 1800)

Would like to hear from anyone else who shares these names.

I have one Brownhills in my family - Margaret, born about 1822, married David LOW on the 13th Dec. 1848 in Dundee.
Issue - James, Thomas, Charles Innes, William, John, George, Jean & Mary Ann.
In 1891 Margaret is living in Longforgan with her son James & daughter Mary Ann.

Would Margaret be one of yours?

I have a Margaret Brownhill, but born a generation earlier, in 1788 in Meigle.  She married in Dundee, where the family had moved,   Her father was Charles Brownhill.  I suspect his wife was Agnes Henderson.  Charles and Agnes had several children, including at least 3 sons who would have carried on the name,  They were:

WILLIAM BROWNHILL, born 1778 in Meigle.  A certain William Brownhill died in Dundee in 1843.  No parents are mentioned, but he is described as a "weaver and old soldier".  At his time of death, he lived at Rosebank.  Margaret's son also lived at Rosebank.

DAVID BROWNHILL, born 1780 in Meigle.

ALEXANDER BROWNHILL, born 1786 in Meigle

Brownhill is not that common a name.  Perhaps one of the above is the father of your Margaret?  Let me know if it proves to be the case.

Since your reply (4 years ago) I have linked our 2 families and have found information on your Margaret Brownhill (married to David Low).

She is the daughter of William Brownhill and Margaret Lynch.  She died in Balmerino in 1902.  Cause of death was morbis cordis (heart disease).

Her father, William Brownhill (born 1778 in Meigle, Perth) , was the brother of my ancestor, Margaret Brownhill (born 1788 in Meigle).

Hi Dianne,

If you let me know your email address, I can send what I have on Margaret Brownhills & David Low.  Not much, but their descendants would be related to you.

Regards,
Alison
