mis-understood Surname's
« on: Thursday 25 October 07 00:11 BST (UK) »

Does anyone have the same problem as me
one of the Surname's I am researching is
GIVEN
the problem is that every time I put this surname in a search
it comes up with all sorts of hits (example)
his given name was Huh?? or I was given this link
could anyone suggest how I can stress that this is a Surname

Hi Elaine

I had/have a similar problem with MATES/MEAT   Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Try using the + and - facility e.g "Given" +surname,   +<area you are interested in> , etc.

Try all sorts of variations to see if you can narrow it down.  I also had a problem with Stokes/Stoke.

Still, I think I'd rather have these than all my Jones ones  Undecided

did you eventually find a way to find them
I feel sorry for anyone searching these names that
have different meanings if I pluralise it I get hits with Surname Givens
but our family never had an S at the end of it
I dont think I would like to search for Jones or Smith
so I think I will stick to trying My Given's
thanks Gadget

Thanks aghadowey
I am going to try all of these and see what happens
I may be as old as my ancestors before I find a way of
doing it but never mind

Given (sorry!) that we are now in the computer age, I have similar problems with one of my surnames:
HACKING!

If only (say) Google allowed one to search for Hacking rather than hacking (i.e. to specify that the word starts with an upper case letter) that might help a bit.

Sometimes I try:
hacking + genealogy
or
hacking + genealogy + liverpool

But it's a pest.

Hi Elaine

I've been doing a bit of googling for you as well  Smiley

with "given family history" , I found this site:

http://www.ancientfaces.com/research/surnames/G/given

Not sure if you have it. I'm still having an explore!

Added - also with "Given genealogy"

PS I've just remembered that one of my students, long ago, was a Given  Cheesy

Had a bit of a similar problem as I was researching the family name King... on this forum, if you enter King into the search engine, you get every word that contains the letters KING...including seeking, looking, hacking, taking etc etc etc. I got thousands of hits. I did ask about it but a mod said nothing could be done about it... Sad

That's the way it goes I guess...

Cheers,

how about putting GIVEN* which would bring up all the names with GIVEN as the beginning so yes you would get the GIVENS too but listed first would be GIVEN (does that make sense?)
