Has anyone out there come across the Munn family of Cliffe?? Joseph Munn died there 1840, age 70, and I think his wife was Mary--he was father of Flora born 1820, but I cant find his marriage--nor can I make head or tale of the Munn births in the area--tied in knots!! any suggestions gratefully etc.--CITYARK must be the best resourse on the web--but I am confused.........

IGI has the Christening of a Flora Munn 9th Jul 1820 in Cliffe. Parents are James Munn & Mary ?
It's an extracted record of the Bishop's transcripts of Cliffe at Hoo, 1813-1849.

I've found extracted marriages on IGI (Bishop's transcripts 1813-1849), but there's no sign of a Joseph Munn marriage.
I agree that CityArk is brilliant, but must admit I also find it hard going, luckily I've only needed to use it once. Perhaps someone more experienced with CityArk will read this & have a few search tips that will make things easier!

Dear all-- AARGHH!! My mistake it was James Munn not Joseph. I dont know why I typed Joseph, senility probably. Flora was a direct ancester--I have birth record, marriage, death etc--its sorting out her parents marriage and correct siblings i am struggling with. Thank-you all for the help. I too have wasted many a happy day on CityArk--just love it, especially the burials--whips you straight into Dickens!!! But it is mighty hard to search. Wouldnt it be great if all archive holders could get thier stuff on line--I thought something along those lines was going to happen for the millenium, perhaps I dreampt it!!!! -Sally

I have some Munns at High Halstow, which is adjacent to Cliffe. All I know is that a Joseph Munn (I think from Meopham) lived there with wife Sarah Ash. Joseph was buried there 1781, and I have only found one child, William b 1771 at High Halstow (my ggg grandfather). Jos & Sarah were married 1762 High Halstow, so it would be reasonable to assume that there are more kids somewhere. The timing appears correct for your James.
There may be a connection here, but I have not yet got enough information. I am trying to extract all the Munns from the records in the area, than perhaps I can make sense of them!! Are you able to provide anything else?
Regards Michael CM Pipe

Thank-you Dave, I came accross that one, but thought perhaps too late a marriage--James would be 47, which is fine, but the couple had been breeding in Cliffe by then, and I would have thought they would marry there too if the marriage was that late--- on Cityark I found James Munn to Mary More 14 Dec 1795 at St Mary Higham, and then a batch of munns bapt at Hoo All Hallows from around this date--but cant proove the link!!
Susan Munn at Cliffe is one of my question marks-- Flora died at the home of Sarah Elsegood, nee Munn, Cliffe, and I am assuming she was a sister rather than an Aunt-- born c 1812. Thanks again for everyones help- Sally

Hi Sally, This should fill a few gaps:
Children of James Munn & Mary More
Cliffe at Hoo: Mary bap 21 May 1797 (b 8 Mar 1797), Michael bap 24 Feb 1799 (b 10 Dec 1798)
Hoo Allhallows: James bap 16 Jan 1803, Mary bap 19 Apr 1805 (haven't found burial of first Mary yet), William bap 6 Mar 1808, Ann bap 8 Jul 1810, Sarah bap 28 Mar 1812
Cliffe at Hoo: Susan bap 29 Jan 1814 (check - maybe 1815)
Hope this helps

I was checking out Sarah Elsegood in the 1851 census and she says she was born in Allhallows - only two Munn families in Allhallows at the time of her birth, one being the children of James & Mary. The appearance and departure of this family in Allhallows coincides exactly with the other births attributable to John & Mary in Cliffe. I have no other James & Mary who fit into this time gap.
Additionally It seems that it would be highly unlikely that there was another Sarah Munn who married a George Elsegood and was born at Allhallows in 1812 - there is no other record of such other events, therefore my assumption is that this must be the correct family.
Of course this is not 100% conclusive, but there appear to be no alternatives.
Michael
