Tarnished reputation of Great Grandfather

Certain documents I have received tarnish the character of my maternal great grand father and mother .
Would anyone know if arrest records or jail, asylum etc records are kept for the 1880 s in Manchester, particularly the Chorlton Upon Medlock and or the Hulme districts?
