If you have ancestors who were potters in Stoke-on-Trent in the 1830s or 40s, you MUST read "When I was a Child" by Charles Shaw. It was written in the 1890s, but it is so fresh and clear that it could have been published yesterday. Charles was born in Tunstall in 1832, and this book tells of his childhood - his working life in various potbanks, which began when he was seven, and his family's spell in the workhouse after his father lost his job. The book, which was first published as a serial in a newspaper, also touches on the Methodist church and the Chartist riots of 1842 which took place locally.
This book provides a stunning and often shocking insight into life in the Potteries in the early Victorian era. Get it if you can, it is an amazing read - ISBN 0904573427 http://www.calibanbooks.co.uk/htmlpages/wasachild.html
