Advice on Pulborough, Sussex
« on: Friday 26 October 07 21:50 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

I've just found that one of my ancestors appears to have been born in Pulborough in Sussex (from the census.)  Unfortunately I think he would have been born in around 1832-3 which is before the civil records began so I need to go to the Parish.

Can anyone tell me what registers I would need to look at for Pulborough?  I have no knowledge of Sussex at all unfortunately!

I'm looking for the baptism/birth of John HAMPSHIRE (father William HAMPSHIRE)

Any ideas?

thanks for reading,  Sarah

IGI has a baptism record for a John Hampshire on 1st August 1830 in Pulborough. Father is William and mother is Eliza.

Hello Sarah - the IGI has two John Hampshire baptisms both extracted records so should be accurate.

John Hampshire baptised Pulborough 1st August 1830 father William mother Eliza

John Hampshire baptised Pulborough 17th December 1833 mother Eliza

It's possible the first John died and a second son was given the same name.

I'll post details of the William/Eliza marriage in a moment

Hi Sarah

It looks like the family had moved to Lewisham, and were recorded there in 1841. The family was as follows:
William Hampshire, 35, Ag Lab
Eliza, 35, Wife
Charles, 15, Son
John, 10, Son
Mary, 4, Dau
George, 2, Son
They were living in South End Lane

(HO107/484/11 Folio 6 Page 5)

In 1851, there is a John Hampshire, born 1830 in Pullborough (according to the image) lodging with the Standen family at an address that looks like Sydenham (HO107/1591 Folio 491 Page 18)

That same census, William and Eliza were living in what looks like Whitefoot Lane, Lewisham. (HO107/1591 Folio 477 Page 1)
William was a Farmers Labourer aged 47, born in Fittleworth, Sussex
Eliza, also 47 was born in Stopham
Charles, 25, born Pulborough
Mary, 13, Lewisham
George, 10, Lewisham
Jane, 8, Lewisham
William, 6, Lewisham
Henry, 3, ?

Crikey!! I never expected such a wonderful respone - thank you all so much.

This looks very promising. I've found my John in the 1881 and 1891 census in Lewisham where he was born in 'sussex' and something that looked like 'Paollougher, Sussex' which I worked out to be Pulborough.  His three children were born two in Sydenham and one in Peckham so the census records from Sydenham could be promising.

He was 48 when he married in 1881 so when you look in the census further back he appears to be lodging and working (I'd found a few possibles!) rather than with his family which is a pain!

I know his father is definitely William, a labourer, from the marriage certificate.

I shall copy down all this info and stew over it for a few hours!

Again thank you all so much for all your replies - I certainly didn't expect this when I logged on this morning! This board is full of such wonderful people.

Have a lovely day!

Hi
I have PM'd you but I have now found details of
William Hampshire born Fiddlesworth Sussex 1804, marr 12/09/1825 Stopham
to
Eliza nee Hopkins
Charles born Pulborough 1826
John born poss Pulborough 1831
Mary born Lewisham 1838
George born poss Lewisham 1839
Jane born Lewisham 1843
William born Lewisham 1845
Henry born 1848 Lewisham

I am following the line of Charles born circa 1826.
Although I have no concrete evidence I think these possibly were non conformists
