Canadian birth and marriage
« on: Saturday 27 October 07 01:29 BST (UK) »

Hi all  Smiley

This is a bit of a stab in the dark but as I am new to Canadian genealogy maybe someone can help me.

I am looking for a birth and marriage in Canada.  The problem is it could be any state at all.

The marriage is between John W Joyce and Gertrude Pollard (approx. 1919) and the birth is of Gertrude P(atricia?) Joyce (approx. 1921).

Do I stand a chance of finding these?   Undecided

Hi Damian,

Do you have them on a passenger list?  Sometimes it lists their destination.

Ontario Births are only public up to 1910, so anything after that you have to order directly from the Gov't.

Ontario Marriages are available up to 1925.....just searching now for you

Hi Damian,

Did a quick search on Ancestry.ca and found a marriage for a John William Joyce in Ontario
but as I no longer have a membership I couldn't access further.

If you ask a fellow lister who has a membership I'm sure  someone will do a lookup to see if this is your John .

Without a exact Province in Canada it might  be like looking for a needle in a haystack.

At present only Manitoba  Vital Statistics has a online BMD Index along with British Columbia and Saskatchewan has births and  deaths .   You can search their sites to see what years are available

Good luck.

Do you have a year of birth for John or Gertrude roughly?

Do you have the family in the 1930 US Census?  Seems John W. Joyce is from Ohio but is working for the Gov't and living in Liverpool England.

Thanks everyone for their help so far!   Smiley

Yes I have them in 1930 but I think I have found John in 1920 (US) and it says he is "single" so perhaps they married in 1920.  I suppose I have to hope they are living in Canada in 1921 or they will have slipped between the two.  Does anyone know when this census will be available for the public?

http://www.findmypast.com/passengerListPersonSearchStart.action
there are two Gertrude Joyces - aged 39 and 11 - arriving in 1932, Southampton - USA.  Might the corresponding passenger list in the US tell you where the younger Gertrude was born?

There should presumably be border crossing records for them as well, both coming back into the US, and arriving into Canada (form 30): http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/genealogy/022-908.006-e.html

2013, I believe, is when the 1921 Canadian census will become available.

New info suggests the family were in Montreal in 1920...does that help track down the birth or marriage?   Huh

Wow!  That's great.   Smiley

Can I ask you your source...is there a original document somewhere or is this transcribed somewhere?

Thanks!

Ancestry has put the Drouin Collection on which has the parish records for the Province of Quebec from 1600's to 1960.
