Hi Folks,

Greetings from Toronto, Canada.

I would dearly like to make contact, and exchange family history notes with, any descendant or researcher of the family of my cousin, Richard LAWRENCE, who married Martha CHURCH of Bishopstone, northern Wiltshire, and farmed in Betterton and Farnborough, Berkshire.

Richard LAWRENCE was baptized in Hilmarton 1803.  In 1828, in Bishopstone, North Wilts, Richard LAWRENCE of Betterton, Berks, married Martha CHURCH.  In the 1841 census, Richard 35 and Martha 25 farmed in Betterton, in the parish of Ardington, Berks;  in the 1851 census, for Farnborough, Berks, Richard 48 was a farmer of 700 acres in Upper Farm, living with Martha 42;  in the 1861 census for Farnborough, Berks, there are Richard Lawrence 57, farmer of 660 acres, married to Martha 51, who was born in Bishopstone, Wilts  -  no children;  cannot find Richard after 1861;  at the 1871 census, Martha was living with daughter Susan HARRIS, in Minster, Kent.  Richard and Martha had issue, including: 

(a)   William LAWRENCE, born in Betterton, baptized in Ardington, Berks, 1829.  [unverified] William married EVANS.  At the 1861 census, William 31 was a farmer of 1,000 acres in Ham Farm House, in Shirley, in Croydon, living with wife, Mary Emmeline 28, who had been born in Milford, Pembrokeshire;  by the 1871 census, at Ham Farm House, William was a Land Agent, living with his family of 7 daughters and one son, all born in Croydon, Surrey.  William died about 1880.  At the 1881 census Emily 50, widow, was living in Rosedale House, Gatton Road, in Reigate Foreign, Surrey with seven of her unmarried children;  1891 and 1901 censuses, Mary living in Croydon.  William and Mary Emmeline had issue. 

(b)   Mary LAWRENCE, born in Betterton 1831.  In 1850, Mary married William ROWLES.  In the 1851 census, they were living in West Ilsley, Berks, where William was a farmer;  in 1861 they were at Farnborough Road, West Ilsley, Berks;  in 1881, still in West Ilsley, William 60, a farmer of 400 acres, with daughters, Sarah 26 and Elizabeth 24, both unmarried  -  Mary 49 was visiting her sister, Susan HARRIS in Kent in 1881.  William died in Wantage in 1882.  In 1901, Mary, widow, own means,  was living with daughter Sarah WRIGHT in Hackney;  William and Mary had issue. 

(c)   George Richard LAWRENCE, born about 1837 in Betterton.  George married Emily SWINFORD, who was born 1845 in Margate, Kent, and who died in Herefordshire about 1878.  In 1871, George, a general practioner, and Emily were living in Towcester, Northamptonshire;  in 1881 George 43, surgeon,  was a widower, living in Bures St. Mary, Suffolk;  I cannot find George after 1881.  George and Emily had issue. 

(d)   Susan LAWRENCE, born in Betterton 1839.  Susan married James S. HARRIS.  At the 1871 census, James and Susan were living in Minster, Kent;  1881 James 45 was a general practioner, living at Station Road, Birchington, Kent with Susan 41 and her sisters, Martha 32 and Mary Rowles  49 visiting  -  no children;  1891 still at Station Road;  1901 St. John’s Road, Birchington, Kent, with husband, James;  no known issue. 
       
(e)   Robert Church LAWRENCE, born in Betterton 1841.  Robert LAWRENCE, gentleman, migrated to Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, on the “True Briton” in Jan – March 1864.  In 1866, Robert, a coachman, married Mary HARTY, widow, nee GOOLEY, at St. Mary’s Church, St. Kilda.  By 1867, Robert was a police constable, in Bendigo, Victoria;  later, he was a miner and then a watchman at the Great Extended Hustlers Mine, living in Bendigo.  In 1921, in Bendigo, Robert, aged 79, died and he was buried in Bendigo cemetery.  Robert and Mary had issue.
