I'm looking for the birth of Charles McGreavy born about 1822. Charles was convicted of burglary in the Cockermouth Quarter Sessions & transported to Australia about 1844. Can anyone help?

Hi
Do you know his age?
It might be easier to narrow it down as he may not have lived -never name been born - in Cockermouth.
Best wishes

Hi Emma, Charles McGreavy was born about 1821, I think his father was Peter. According to the 1841 cencus he was a weaver living in Botchergate. Carlisle. I think he was in gaol in Cockermouth that was where he was convicted.

Hi Ronnymel
Thanks. That makes loads of difference and explains a lot! If he was baptised actually in Carlisle as opposed to near it, there are a limited number of places to look at this date. If you don't find him before I do, I will have a look.
Best wishes
Emms.

Hi Rhonda. It's been a beautiful sunny day here in England, so I went and had a play in the records.
You were definitely in luck!
I started on St Mary's Carlisle as it was an early date. Then I realised I was being very silly! With a name like that, I should look in the Roman Catholic records first! I think it will turn out to be Irish at a guess. No guarantee, but on this occasion iy paid off!
They've spelt it McGravy, but you will see more variations than that! I guess it will be from the accent. I think his father may have had a brother here too, and I'm pretty sure I have him as witness at the marriage.
Transcriptions follow., form the Roman Catholic Church in Carlisle. (Modern Parish is Our Lady's, but this will be a predecessor, I think Chapel St or West Walls.) Here goes!
Baptisms
1821 Was born Charles Son of Peter McGravy X Margt McGill his wife Aug 6, Baptised Septr 9th.
Sponsor Thos X Jane Falloon Browns Row. by me Jos Marshall Min.
1818 Was born Margt daughter of Henry McGravy X Mary Murphy his Wife Sep 25th Baptised Same Day. Sponsor Bern-d & Cath Fitzpatrick
Marriages 1816 July 15 Henry McGravy} John Straning?} Jos Marshall Mary Murphy } Peter McGravy} MA [I don't know if that will stay lined up in the posting but they're in vertical pairs. ie. Henry McGravy married Mary Murphy, witnesses Peter McGravy and John Straning?}
I hope that helps you along a bit with the research!
Best wishes.
Emms.

Hello Emms. Sorry I've taken so long to reply but have been away on holiday. Thanks so much for the info it certainly helps. Accordinging to the 1841 cencus Peter McGreavy's wife was Agnes. Perhaps Margaret McGill died & he remarried. If you are at the record Office some time do you think you would be able to look up a marriage for Charles McGreavy to an Elizabeth ? about 1838-1842. His convict record states he had a wife Elizabeth. Hope I'm not imposing. Regards, Rhonda

Hi Rhonda
Thanks for getting in touch. It's great to know you got it and where this fits in.
Yes, I'll definitely be going up again soon, and I'll have a look for those. I did look at a few marriages, mind, and I didn't see these. I'll let you know though.
Have you got that full census listing? Are there any more children?
Best wishes
Emms
