William Born and his wife Maria came to london in about 1861/64 from Berlin.Hopefully BERLIN BOB will read this and more info found out by MANCHESTER RAMBLER under ALBERTINA WILLEMINA BORN in the London section of rootschat. Also a site looked up by CASALGUIDI about sugarbakers of which AUGUST FRIEDRICH BORN was one in HAMBURG in 1761. Any help on German records please, Philsearch

Hi Philsearch
Naturalisation papers are at the National Archives in Kew, London. See their information leaflet:
http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=242
Searching their catalogue (procat) for ............... born William ............. brings up the following reference (unfortunately the full documents aren't online):
Reference number: HO 144/298/B2638
Nationality and Naturalisation: Born, William, from Germany. Resident in London. Certificate A5661 issued 10 January 1888. 1888
Could he be yours if there are no other William BORNs that would fit the description
Best wishes
Casalguidi

Hi all, In 2005 i posted on this site for help with the Born Family from Berlin, Prussia. I received kind help from Manchester rambler and was able to fill in missing bits once they were in England.(*) Things seem to have moved on a fair bit judging by the number of questions now being posted about German roots. I have from the 1871 cencus for Hackney the following. William Born 30 Berlin Prussia confectioner (sugar baker ) Maria Born 29 Berlin Prussia Wife Livie Born 9 Berlin Anna Born 6 London Middlesex From the dates of birth of the children it looks like they came to England between 1861 and 1864. any more info on their past would be fantastic, cheers Phil.

Phil,
Does the marriage cert give his father's profession or trade?
The Berlin Address Books from 1850 onwards are online. I could not identify any sugar bakers called BORN, but there were about 20 BORN entries in 1860s.
Knowing the address will make it easier to progress.

Hi Phil,
do you know this site already ??: http://www.mawer.clara.net/history.html
If not, check it out ASAP
it's all about german sugar bakers in Britain and includes a database and history and all sorts of background info.
there is a searchable database, which gives 2 BORNs
BORN August Friederich (Zucker-becker(*) (married St.Nikolai) Hamburg 1761 BORN William of Germany (age 40) 42 Umberston St , London, source is 1881 census RG11 /0453 /8 /12
William looks like yours, but I wonder if August Friedrich (Frederick) was a relation, and "laid the groundwork" for William to come over ?
Well worth a look, even for 'non' sugar-bakers
Bob
(*) = Sugar baker, original was probably Zuckerbäcker, pronounced Becker)
ps can you add a link to your original post(s) so we don't duplicate work. Thanks

Hi Justin, I replied to you but i dont know where the message went. Yes his father was a bricklayer on the cert and by the time Frederick William was married for the second time he was also a bricklayer. Cheers, Phil.

Hi all, I think i may have made a big mistake. Can anyone look at the 1881 census for William Born (born in Germany / Prussia. Ive spotted there are 2 of them and i think they got muddled up along the way. Looking at the children on the 1871 census there is a Livie and Anna aged9 and 6 along with their father William and mother Maria. It looked like Maria died and William re married a Matilda but in 1881 ive found a William with Mary and children Lizzie and Annie. Would it be strange for 2 William Born,s to come over about the same time from Germany. Also ive just noticed that on the marriage cert i have that William is down as a bachelor and not a widower. sorry to ramble on, Phil.
