How do I trace a bigamist?
« on: Saturday 27 October 07 11:06 BST (UK) »

Hi I am a new member who is trying to trace my grandfather (my family have all passed on) who was a bigamist. I have a marriage certificate for him Arthur James Humphreys 23 seaman quoting father John Humphreys decd. October 4th 1920 Pulham St Mary. My dad was born 15th September 1921 and had memories of him collecting him from school in Pulham St Mary, but we know his dad was caught and went to prison. I have searched the prison records, court sessions, justice minutes and the local papers. My Nan married again on 1st February 1928 so I have been looking between 1920-1928.
Would he have gone to a prison where he originally came from, which rumours were Liverpool. What do I need to do next as I have hit a brick wall!

I helped trace a family criminal arrested in Worcester, U.K. and he truned up in Wormwood Scrubs. It is possible he could be moved to almost any prison, but most likely one in the immediate area where he was committed.

I found our man by checking the census for all areas.

Hi

I had a very quick look at the 1901 census as your man should have been about 4 at the time.

There was an Arthur J Humphrys and a John Humphreys of the correct sort of ages in Lewisham.  I suggest that you put a request on the boards to see if they are, in fact, father and son.  I have not got Ancestry, but lots of people on here have.

If you find him in 1901 it is possible that that is where he married first........................ and returned after he went to prison.

There is one marriage on FreeBMD that could fit:
Arthur J Humphreys and Doris Roffey married in Watford in June quarter of 1918.

Best of luck.
