Seeking assistance from anyone who may be able to pin point the arrival of John STOREY aged about 43 and his 18 year old son George Robert STOREY.
John was born in Saint Giles, Cripplegate, London in 1812 and later married Rachel BRAYBROOK. George Robert STOREY was born St George in the East, Stepney, London in 1836. The 1851 census found them living at 165 Waterloo Rd, Lambeth.John was recorded as “Butcher & Cheesemonger” and George as a "Surveyors pupil"
What is known is that on the 4th April, 1855 George STOREY died of dysentery and scurvy at Ballarat. The informant was his father John STOREY. He noted that George had been in the colony of Victoria for 6 months. In 1865 Rachel with the remaining children (except a James STOREY?) arrived in Australia on the Western Ocean and rejoined John after at least 10 years. Unfortunately Rachel died soon after of Breast cancer.
On the 10th October, 1887 John STOREY (Butcher) died in Ballarat at which time the Informant, his son-in-law ? stated John had been in Victoria for 32 years given an arrival of around 1855. I have been unable to locate them on the Vic or NSW assisted and unassisted passages give or take a number of years. Does anyone have any information that may give a possible arrival anywhere else
Since they were together when George died, they probably arrived together late in 1854. Unless George left later and joined up with his father on arrival.
Since no other state apart from Victoria was mentioned on either death certificate, it appears that they arrived in that State.
Not all passenger lists survive, and huge numbers of people arrived during the gold rushes.
Thanks Christine for taking the tome and interest to reply. I think you are right about the missing passenger lists, just my luck the STOREY family members I am looking for are on it and now missing in some blackhole. I think l will move my enquirers to Ballarat and see if I can find obituaries or similar for the older John STOREY. Long shot but if I do it may give me an indication of when and how they arrived?
It certaininly would have been in interesting time when they did arrive. They would have walked right into the build up to the Eureka Rebellion.
