WARD - 1901 census COMPLETED THANK YOU
« on: Wednesday 24 October 07 17:38 BST (UK) »

Hi there,
I'm looking for an Edgar Alexander Ward in the 1901 census, born 1897 in Fulham, or his father Edgar Ernest Ward who was a Musical Director, possibly living in Mortlake, Surrey.  Thanks a lot.

I'm having a little trouble finding them so far - do you know the name of Edgar Alexander's mother?

www.historicaldirectories.org shows in 1899 Ward, Edgar & Sydney, Theatrical Agents, business address 1. Southampton Street, WC.  The London Suburban Directory of 1901 also shows Ward, Edgar, living at 142 Hurlingham Road (Fulham).  There's a George Ward at 146.

Hi Jorose,
Thanks for that so far. It's strange why Edgar Ernest is not showing up in the census when clearly the family is living in or around Fulham and he's in involved in the music side of theatre.  At the moment I don't know the name of Edgar Alexander's mother but I have sent for the b.c. and that will give me more info.  I already have Edgar A.'s m.c. dated 1921 and his father is deceased at that time, family living in East Sheen, Mortlake.  No sign of a birth or death for the father but very interesting about the agency business.  I will post the mother's name when I get it just in case you are able to take it further.  Once again, many thanks.

Hi Jorose,
I hope you see this posting as I have just received the b. cert for Edgar Alexander.  The father has now expanded his name to Tom Edgar Ernest Ward and the mother is Annie Eliza Ward nee Hague.
I have looked up Tom and found a large family group in Lincs, his father also a Professor of Music.  However, I still can't find a marriage cert. for Tom and Annie, nor Annie in the 1901 census(Tom died in 1901 in Holborn).  I would be grateful if you could do your magic and produce something for me.  Thanks a lot.

Okay, I can see Tom Edgar Ernest Ward died aged 42 in 1901, and him in 1861, where was he between those dates? He could have well been married in 1881 and 1891, have you found him in those censuses?  (It appears that his family moved to Nottingham, and I think his birth certificate might be in 1858 as just plain Edgar Ernest Ward, to give you even more of a headache).

What's the address on the birth certificate, incidentally?

There are an Edgar Ward (3) and a Leslie Ward (6), both born London, in Lydd, Kent, in 1901, and a Leslie Ward was born in Fulham in 1894 - I can't access the full info but could this be Edgar and a brother?

I think I'm going round in circles.  Tom Edgar was at home in 1871, then family moved to Notts. as you said, but he had left by 1881 but haven't found him anywhere else, married or not.  Can't find him in 1891, still can't find a marr. record, and can't find Annie Eliza in 1901.  Their son Edgar Alexander was born in 1897, 60 Wardo Avenue, Fulham.
I wondered if Annie had died also, shortly after the birth, and Edgar and Leslie (is that spelling male or female?) were being looked after in Lydd, Kent.  Unfort. I couldn't find a death record for her around 1898/9 to support this.
Great if you have any more ideas but otherwise, some things you just can't fathom out if the info isn't out there.
