Mystery address COMPLETED! Thanks Tricia!
« on: Saturday 27 October 07 16:58 BST (UK) »

Hi

Is there anyone familiar with the area of Wallington, Croydon in the late 1920's early 1930's? I have a family birth certificate and marriage certificate with an address of 63 Small Holdings, Little Woodcote, Wallington but can't seem to find this address on any map.

Can anyone shed any light?

Thanks

This area still exists and I live next to it and work there.

The smallholdings were created by the Council in the 1920s for servicemen returned from the First World War. Some are now given over to field crops and others have become nurseries for garden plants. The area is called The Little Woodcote Estate and has distinctive black weatherboard houses which originally were rented out by the council to the servicemen. Over the last few years the tenants have been allowed to buy them.

A lot of the actual 'small' holdings were closed down when local retailers complained about competition. There is still a guy who has a pig farm  and sells directly to the public. The original small holdings sold different things from each property.

63 Small holdings Little Woodcote is a bit of a vague address now as the lanes have names.

However I will do my best to search out anything that may be no. 63 and if you like, take a photo, if the owners agree.

Please bear in mind that I may not be able to trace it.

Oh my god, thats great  Grin thanks SO much. If you can find any trace of it I'd be very grateful, but even if not its nice to just know something about where my grandparents lived.

Thanks again! You've made my day!

Hi Jo

I've been out this morning but it is pelting down with rain and visibilty isn't great and I don't like playing chicken with cars on narrow country lanes!

I've found 59 and I know where 69 is but they are in totally different areas so I'll have another scout around on the way to work tomorrow. These are plots of land as opposed to streets and I know that in the area where I haven't looked some of the buildings have been altered.

Could you let be have the names of the people concerned so if I do strike lucky I can at least approach the owner with a name.

Thanks,

A wet and soggy Tricia Grin Grin Grin

Hi, Jo

I have just Emailed 18 photos to you. As I have explained this house is currently empty and renovation has just been started by the new owner. The house looks just as it would have looked when your grandparents lived in it though I am afraid that inside is a bit of a mess to say the least. The builder let me have a look around but the kitchen was a pile of rubble and is obviously being gutted. The roof is a disaster!

A photo for the curious; no.63 is the house on the right

Regards, Tricia
