**COMPLETED** John Tutt marrying Mary ? in Hailsham area c.1740
« on: Saturday 27 October 07 17:24 BST (UK) »

Hi

Back on my Tutt line, I am looking for a marriage of a John Tutt (or Tutte) to a Mary in the Hailsham area at about 1740. I have looked all through the transcript of the Hailsham parish records and can't see anything that matches. The Herstmonceux transcript at Brighton History Centre had nothing either.

As far as I can see, the first of their children baptised in Hailsham was Elizabeth, who was baptised on 29 July 1741.

The IGI record for Elizabeth's baptism is complete and utter garbage, and is a submitted entry. It states that Elizabeth was the daughter of "John OR Known as TUTT RICE" and "Mary of Hurstmonceux Battle Parish Weaver"!!, The Transcipt of the Parish records doesn't have this in it anywhere!

Many thanks if you can find this marriage

Don't know if this is any help Glen - It's the closest John Tutt to a Mary, don't seem to be any other possibles  Huh

Friston - 20th October 1731
Mary Robertson and John Tutt

Annoyingly thats all the information on the SMI
Friston's not that far from Hailsham as the crow flies

Thanks for looking Suey

It looks like another record for the "Hmm, maybe" pile, which is now wobbling rather precariously.  The "Beyond reasonable doubt" pile looks positively pathetic in comparison! Grin

Yipee!

Just a short update on another movement from "Hmm, maybe" to "Beyond Reasonable Doubt", and its a situation I never expected.

John Rice married Mary Weaver in 1739 in Battle, Sussex. So where does the Tutt name come from?

Well, there was a Gentleman of the name of John Tutt in Hailsham, who left his estate to his "kinsman" John Rice, with the proviso that henceforth he was to be known as John Rice Tutt!

There is even mention of this will in an Act of Parliament of 1740 enabling John and his heirs to take the surname Tutt, pursuant to the will of John Tutt, deceased.

Things have just got very interesting!

That is good news! sounds intriguing.  Just shows you need to think out of the box with IGI submitted records, I took it that Mary was a weaver by trade not by name Huh

You may already know this...SMI says both John Rice and Mary Weaver were married by licence and both were from Herstmonceux.

Yep, I thought she was a Weaver from Herstmonceux as well.

And no, I didn't have the extra info that both were from Herstmonceux and married by licence. More sweating over a hot microfiche machine may bring further developments.

So once again, thanks for helping
