Looking for all people with the surname BONE and HOSE on the Castle Eden into South Australia which would have been around 1862/3 When I first started my research a lot of years ago I found my Quintin Bone aged 19 on the passenger list but didn't think to look for any other's with these surnames and now that I have progressed and learned I find I need to re-check the list as it is possible he had family come with him after all. I no longer have access to this list and all online searches have come up with nothing.
Any help appreciated. Jean Bone

Hi Jean
There is a record of arrival on the shipping database on http://www.saghs.org.au/shipping.htm
62/2 Castle Eden 26 Dec 1862 Pt Adelaide London
There is a facility on the web site to request research for a fee.
Have had a look at CD of Biographical Index South Australians 1836 - 1885 and can see only Quintin arriving on the Castle Eden amongst the number of BONE entries. No entries in BISA for HOSE arriving on the Castle Eden.

Hi Annie
Thanks for that - have bookmarked. Having PC problems today - rootschat will not display with icons using Firefox - have had to use Internet Explorer to reply.

... did a general search for HOSE and the only ones found arrived on the ship "Joseph Rowan" on 18th June 1854: Agnes, James, Mary & William HOSE. ... Hello Jean,
The HOSEs which Annie kindly found are referred to on: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,23389 as follows: James HOSE "was b 1847 in Dalmellington. The OPR lists him as the illegitimate son of James HOSE (James was a son of James HOSE & Agnes GEMMEL) and BONE (no forename given). The father James m Mary SMELLIE 1850. They and their children William & Agnes migrated to South Australia in 1854 - leaving James's illegitimate child James with Grandma Agnes (GEMMEL) HOSE. They had two further children in SA; James d 1894 in Donald, Vic." His wife Mary died 1881 in Donald, Vic
The passenger list children's births are as follows (both in Dalmellington, Ayrshire): *William HOSE b 23 Feb, bap 29 Feb 1851 William m Mary HANCOCK in Victoria in 1883. They had William James Richard HOSE (1884-1954, born & died in Donald, Vic); Alice Maud Mary HOSE (1996-1965, born & died in Donald, Vic - she married a Richard HANCOCK); Eva Jane HOSE (1886-1906, b & d in Donald, Vic) William HOSE died age 74 in 1925 in St Arnaud, Vic. *Agnes HOSE b 28 Feb 1853 Agnes married a James William SMITH and they had 9 children (one died aged 1 day - won't bother listing them all) in St Arnaud Agnes died age 79 in St Arnaud, Vic in 1933
The two further children born in Milang, South Australia (listed in the Strathalbyn district) were: *Mary HOSE b 5 Sep 1856 Mary married a Louis Napoleon GOBETTI (born Italy) in Vic in 1884 They had children in Donald. *Jemima HOSE b 21 Jun 1858 Jemima married a John James MASCALL in Vic in 1884 Regards,

Annie is referring to the South Australian State Archives - and I used the following links to search for passengers. They certainly don't make it simple for people like me http://www.archives.sa.gov.au > Search Collection - top left of page > Searching - menu bar left of page > Passenger list search - menu bar left of page
You can search by Ship or by passenger name - inserting 'and' between the given and surname. Well that's how I managed to eventually do it

Hi Sue
Yes I think you are correct - can't find my unassisted ancestors. This search is limited to GRG35/48/1 Official Passenger Lists of Emigrants Selected by the Colonization Commissioners 1845-1886.
My initial enthusiasm has just waned
