My 3rd great grandfather, Robert Charlton of Easington accidentally drowned on 27 Dec 1859; an inquest was held on the 28th (which was quick) by Arthur Iveson, coroner for Holderness. Does anyone know where I can locate the coroner's records, or any newspaper reports???
Thanks
Andrew

Hi Andrew, If any records exist, then they migh be at the East Riding archives in Beverley. Also the Central library in Hull has a newspaper archive, just not sure if it will cover the Easington area.
Quick inquests were not unusual, I have one ancestor were the inquest was held the day after the accident and the burial was the day after the inquest.

Hi Bee
Thanks
I've been in touch with the ER Archives, and they tell me that no coroner's records exist prior to 1953. They were good enough to provide me with the parish register entry, which gave a smidge of extra information, namely that Robert Charlton was drowned at sea.
The reason I want to know what happened is that he was a shoemaker - what was he doing at sea??!
So, any help with newspapers, from anyone, great appreciated.
Thanks again Bee
Andrew
