My gt grandparents Edward Kerry and Jane Hunt

Hillingdon Workhouse and Workhouse records in general
« on: Sunday 28 October 07 07:02 GMT (UK) »

Hi my gt grandfather John Oakes died in Hillingdon workhouse in 1895.  I'm intersted in knowing why he was there (he died of "senile decay" though only 57) and whether workhouse records are available anywhere. Anyone have any ideas?

Hi jk58,

Senile decay at the age of only 57 could have been early onset Alzheimer's.

Hillingdon Workhouse records are held at the London Metropolitan Archives.

Just to add, in case you were thinking of making a journey, the London Metropolitan Archives closes for refurbishment at the end of the week until January 2008

A reason for someone having "senile decay" at an early age could be as a result of their trade.

The chemicals used in the Hat making trade included Mercury in making Felt for the hats. This led to thew phrase "Mad as a Hatter"

Some of the chemicals used in Explosives and other industries could have similar effects.

I'm planning to visit the LMA on either the 7th or 14th April.

Would you like me to do a look-up for you?
