Hi,
I have a marriage certificate showing Maria Mason,married to a John Boyland,a soldier in the 77th Middlesex regiment of foot? married at Royal Marine barracks Eastney Portsmouth,(Catholic Chapel) his father is given as George Boyland also a soldier.date of marriage Jan.1849 both were of full age.
from other researchers,I am told that parents of Maria were John and Maria Mason(nee Sillence)Maria was christened 7th October 1832 in Romsey Hants.Having trouble finding details of parents of both bride and groom.
Any help or advice appreciated.

Hi langtry,
Not sure if you have these details:
John and Maria appear to have had one other child baptised in Romsey, Thomas on 15 Feb 1835.
John and Maria were married on 14th February 1832 in Romsey.
There is a baptism for a Maria Sillence in Romsey with the parents Benjamin and Elizabeth Sillence. She was born 9 February and baptised 8 March 1812. They had a number of daughters born and baptised in Romsey before this.
Any idea where John Mason was born - there is a baptism for one in Romsey in 1803, parents William and Elizabeth.

Looks like the correct maria,and we have that Middlesex thing again?Johns Regiment were from there,but they married in Portsmouth?a real puzzle this one,now wondering if maybe,just maybe,John may have gone abroad with Maria soon after the wedding/On the net I read somewhere that the Regiment saw service in Australia.could mean nothing,really thankful for all your efforts.

I've just realised - Maria Mason was only 17 in 1849 when she married (that is, if she has been correctly identified as the one baptised in 1832) - that is not full age. I know people lied, I know they pulled the wool over the eyes of the clergyman, but.....
And also, Maria was baptised in the anglican church - what about her children with John Boyland? Were they baptised as Catholics? Otherwise, why marry in the cathlolic chapel at Eastney.
This is beginning to puzzle me.

Hello Nell,
You and me too?There is certainly a real puzzle here Ie Marriage cert states both of full age,and we know that could mean anything over 21?but.If I have the correcect details of a christening in Romsey Hants 1832,which as you say means she was aged 17 in 1849,I think possibly have incorrect info here?Now thinking that perhaps I need to concentrate on the husband John in order to track down the right Maria?The cert say's that John was a soldier in the 77th middlesex regiment of foot,which suggestd that there was a unit of this regiment based in Portsmouth at the time of the wedding in 1849.the cert also tells me that the place of residence at the time of the wedding was the Royal Marine Barracks Eastney Portsmouth.Johns father George is given as a soldier,so is it likely he was in the same regiment?I know, nothing but questions.I find it hard to accept that this couple vanished off the face of the earth after the wedding?So.maybe it is possible they went with the Regiment to Australia/There is mention on the net that the regiment he was in did serve in Australia,a very long shot,I know.I searched for a John Boyland on the IGI and found a John living in Victoria Australia,with no sign of a wife,nor his d.o.b or place of birth,but there were twelve children between1856 and 1876,among these children there is a Ann Maria,a John,and a George,so food for thought?
Do you know anything about how to find a soldier from Army records? maybe that might be the route to take?Thank you for your patience,
