1840's Stokesley marriage - William SMAILES and Mary Jane PORTEUS

Hi all,

I have a William SMAILES (born in Stokesley c1828) living with his parents in Stokesley in the 1841 census. In 1848 he was married and had a son, Thomas (born in Stokesley) with his wife Mary Jame PORTEUS (also born in Stokesley c1828).

I am almost certain that they were married in Stokesley but have so far been unable to find any records of their marriage. I would be most grateful if anyone would be able to do a lookup for this information.

but no mary porteus

Possible Marriage Registration

1847 Stokesley JAS quarter 24 571

Mary Jane Portus (sic)
William Smales (sic)

Mary Jane appears on FreeBMD under the above reference. William appears under reference 24 511. On close inspection of the original index page it looks like a faded 571.
