1841 census look up - St Georges in the East
« on: Monday 27 December 04 19:31 GMT (UK) »

Hi everyone - newbie to the board - hope  am posting this correctly.

Could SKS do me a look up in the 1841 census for the place ST GEORGES IN THE EAST (think this is right, the address I have is New Gravel Lane London) - names MULLINS and CRAWLEY - I think the Mullins's would have been born in Ireland (Dublin).

TIA

Try this again - hi and welcome and thanks for the references you gave 1841 is not yet indexed.
I found them for you on HO107 703 ED 1 p 33
It should be New Gravel Road but the enumerator has put some gobblygook next to it so not 100% sure.
John Crawley, 40 labourer born Ireland
Mary 40 born Ireland
Dan Mullins 20 labourer born Ireland
Mary 20 born London
Cheers Cougar.
There is another family of Crawleys approx. opposite side of the road in Boarded Entry ref HO107 696 Ed2 p7/8 if you want them.
Had them on this post then computer just dropped out and lost them.

Thanks, Cougar, that is fantastic. I certainly like Ann as a sibling of this group, age is right, etc.

You have been such a help, I wonder if you have access to the 1851 census also? I think they were still there in 1851 - Mary and Daniel Mullins had some kids by this time (John, Julia, Edward and Mary, possibly also a Daniel). Also searching for any traces of Daniel's father Andrew Mullins who appeared to be around at the time of his marriage in 1840.

The info has been so helpful in understanding why this group moved from London to Newcastle - from your info, Dennis Crawley was a "coal whipper" ie he unloaded the Newcastle coal ships - later on his B-I-L Daniel Mullins worked on the collier ships (called screw colliers) - the move that puzzled us now seems to have been a natural progression!

Many thanks, Stella
