Hi Jim,
This looks like Andrew and family in 1851 and 1861:
1851 Residence: Village of Gourdon, Bervie, Kincardineshire Andrew Goive, m, head, 39, dock labourer, Bewholme, Kincardine Mary ", f, wife, 37, -, Bewholme, Kincardine Jessie ", f, dau., 13, scholar, Bewholme, Kincardine Alexander ", m, son, 11, farm servant, Bewholme, Kincardine Andrew ", m, son, 9, scholar, Bewholme, Kincardine Ann ", f, dau., 6, scholar, Bewholme, Kincardine Mary ", f, dau., 4, scholar, Bewholme, Kincardine Munroe ", m, son, 3, -, Bervie, Kincardine John ", m, son, 1, -, Bervie, Kincardine
1861 Residence: 4 East Shore St, Bervie, Kincardineshire Andrew Gove, m, head, 51, labourer, Benholm, Kincardineshire Mary ", f, wife, 49, wife, Benholm, Kincardineshire Mary ", f, dau., 16, servant, Benholm, Kincardineshire John ", m, son, 12, -, Bervie, Kincardineshire Robena ", f, dau., 9, scholar, Bervie, Kincardineshire Christina ", f, dau., 7, scholar, Bervie, Kincardineshire Euphemia ", f, dau., 7, -, Bervie, Kincardineshire Isabell ", f, dau., 5, scholar, Bervie, Kincardineshire Annabella ", f, dau., 3, -, Bervie, Kincardineshire Charlotte Mitchel, f, g-dau., 2, -, Bervie, Kincardineshire
1861 Residence: Bothy of Last, Bervie, Kincardineshire (Head: James Skene, ploughman) Andrew Gove, m, fellow serv., 20, ploughman, Benholm, Kincardineshire
The IGI (International Genealogical Index) shows a marriage for Andrew Gove to Mary Ann Strachan on the 14th December 1836 in Bervie, Kincardineshire. There's a few submitted entries for this family, but there is an extracted record for the birth (1st Feb 1810) and christening (11 Feb 1810) at Benholm for Andrew Gove. His parents were James Gove and Isobel Watson. There is also a possible birth and christening for Mary Ann Strachan (both 1814 in Benholm), parents listed as John Strachan and Christian Robert. As usual, details would need to be confirmed by their death certificates. Since they lived after 1855, they will be available on ScotlandsPeople.
Hope this helps, hume24

Thanks very much for all this information.
As you've probably gathered, I'm a complete novice at this, so please bear with me if I ask some stupid questions.
It's interesting that there is a "Munroe" listed in the 1851 record. My Grandfather, who would have been Andrew's (the one born about 1841) second son, was called "Munro". Note the different spelling. He was born at Kinneff on 1st August 1872. My own middle name is Munro after my Grandfather.
My Great Grandfather Andrew, married a Martha Begg on 29th Dec 1866 in Bervie. Ive tried that IGI website, and found 2 possible Martha Begg's.
One is a Martha Napier Begg born on 22nd November 1843 in Fetteresso, and the other is a Martha Begg born in Daviot on 21 DEcember 1845. I've never heard the Napier name in the family before, so I wondering if it is the 2nd Martha that is the correct one, or even a completely different one that is not on the index. My Mother was a Martha Begg Gove, but she died in 2000.
Any suggestions as to where I go from here?
Sorry if these are daft questions, but I have to start somewhere!
Many thanks again
Jim

Hi again Jim,
"Munroe" was probably a mistake on the 1851 census return. On the IGI, his name is listed as Monro Gove, born and christened in 1847.
Here's Andrew and Martha in 1871: Residence: Cottor House, Kinneff & Catterline, Kincardineshire Andrew Gove, m, head, 29, labourer, Benholm, Kincardine Martha ", f, wife, 33, -, Fettercairn, Kincardine Mary Ann ", f, dau., 6, -, Fettercairn, Kincardine Andrew ", m, son, 1, -, Bervie, Kincardine
Going by her age and birthplace, this seems like a likely birth: Martha Begg, born 2nd September 1837 in Fettercairn. Parents are James Begg and Mary Christison. Andrew and Martha's marriage certificate, available on ScotlandsPeople, will help to confirm this.

Hi Loumuff and welcome to Rootschat.
If I've followed your post correctly, your husband's G-G- Grandfather was the Andrew Gove, born around 1813. His G-Grandfather, Munro Gove was born around 1847, and would have been my G-Grandfather Andrew Gove's elder brother. He was born around 1841.
That would make his Grandfather and my Grandfather, Munro Gove, cousins. That in turn would make his Father & my Mother 2nd Cousins. If my logic is correct, this means your husband and I are 3rd Cousins! Small world.
You didn't give your Husband's grandfathers name - Was it James by any chance, and did he have a hairdressers shop in Victoria road in Dundee?
I see from your profile that you are in Dundee, and I seem to remember the hairdressers shop, and my Mother telling me that we were related somehow. I was just a young boy at the time, and of course didn't take much notice. Just wondered if it was the same one.
Cheers Jim

Hi Jim
Thanks for replying. Yes, small world it is!!
My husband's grandfather was indeed called James Lamb Gove born 20 September 1904. (My husband is also James Lamb Gove born 3 October 1965). He was a hairdresser and had a shop at the top of Victoria Road.
If you want any more information or photos, just say the word, I can give you copies of what I have.
My husband would be interested in seeing the photo of Andrew Gove and any information you may have, if you wouldn't mind.
I can't believe how easy it is to get hooked on finding the ancestors, its so addictive.
Angie
