Help please (Devonport and other questions!)
« on: Sunday 28 October 07 17:22 GMT (UK) »

Hi everyone,

Just re-started my family tree - I did it a few years ago but i name hunted the characters and paid scant attention to any characters.

Now I am revisiting and starting again from scratch, interrogating each bit of info I have and adding flesh to the characters and historical context.

Anyway, I'm very early on in my studies, but they have led me to Devon and Devonport in particular where my gt. grandfather and gt. grandmother are from. I have just ordered their wedding certificate and am just wondering if any of you king people can embellish/shed nay light on the following, from the certificate . . .

Rueben James Blatchford (35) and Violet May Bullock (21) were married in 1921 in the Devonport registry office. At the date of the marriage they lived at 105 Pembroke Street and 101 Pembroke Street respectively. What was/is this street like? Does it still exist?

Reuben was employed as Corporation Labourer- what would this have entailed?

Reuben's father John, was employed (on the cert.) as a shoemaker - would it be easy to find his shop/where he worked?

Violet's father, Richard James, was a Naval Pensioner - I would love to know more about him - would he have been based at Plymouth? Would it be tricky to find more info on him?

I do apologize if my questions are vague - I am still a novice at this and I have never ventured to Devon so I'm 'blind'.

Any info any of you can give or any light you can shed on these questions would be much, much appreciated.

Regards,

Lee

Hi Lee
Welcome to Rootschat  Cheesy

I can't help with most of your queries but in 1901 census the family are at 14 Pembroke St in a house of multiple occupation- 7 of them occupying only 2 rooms! John is listed as a worker, so wouldn't have had his own shop at that time. Would you like full details if you've not got them already? Trade directories for later years should tell you if John went into business on his own account, try

Thanks so much Janan, will look at the link when i have time - thanks again.

I think i have found the census return to which you refer . . .

The 1901 census does indeed have 7 of them in 2 rooms!  Shocked Am i right in thinking that the same family (with seemingly more members??? 2 new daughters???), in 1891, are at 62 Clowance[sp?] Lane? All the names seem to cross reference?

Also, would you happen to know what the letters after shoemaker signify?

Hello  Cheesy

I live about 10 mins away from the Devonport area of Plymouth.  Pembroke Street does still exist, unfortunately now this part of Plymouth isn't very nice, and over the years, it has become run down.  Although re-generation is coming about, and a few nice apartment blocks have sprung up, trying to bring different people into the area.  Devonport might have been completely different when your ancestor was there.  I know my Gran used to do her shopping in Devonport each week as there was a better range of shops than in Torpoint, where she lived.

In regard to the Naval Pensioner, Devonport was and still is a large naval port, and at one point was the largest Naval port in Europe, so he probably did serve here.  I have had naval ancestors and you can find out more by going to the National Archives Website.  (www.nationalarchives.gov.uk)

If you choose Military History/RoyalNavy, you can then search for a seaman, and download his service record. Smiley.  You will be able to find out his birth date, birth place, more about his appearance, and which ships he served on.

Also another website which might be of interest is the Devon Family History Website (www.devonfhs.org.uk)

This is a bit weird my maiden name was Bullock!!, don't get too excited, all my Bullock ancestors derive from Gloucestershire and Lancashire.

Good Luck, and Plymouth and Devon are a nice place to visit!

Hi Trippy,

Thanks so much for your thorough reply - really interesting.

I'm guessing Pembroke Street has had some major redevelopment since my ancestors time already - none of the original houses that my ancestors lived in can still be there looking at this aerial photo of Pembroke Street, they don't seem 100 years old; http://www.rootschat.com/links/024v/
Or do they?!?!?

Brilliant stuff on the Naval history - I will def do that when i have a bit of time!

Thanks again for your help - I really (REALLY) appreciate it.

Regards,

Lee

P.s. Hope to visit in the not too distant future!

Oh my word!

I was too impatient to wait and I have found him and downloaded his naval career!!! It is amazing! I cannot tell you the thrill!!!

I've only had a quick look through and there's a lot I don't understand. But thankyou! It really is wonderful! Did it take you a while to learn all of the naval lingo on the forms??

Thanks again!

Hi
Glad you are making good progess - how fantastic to be able to download his naval records Grin

Re letters after Shoemaker, looks like Boot M (for maker) added later - you often see Dom (for domestic) added to an entry for Servant, I think it is to do with government statistics?

Hi Lee

Have you thought about e-mailing the Local Studies and Naval History library in Plymouth?  Their address is
localstudies@[at]plymouth.gov.uk          replace [at] with @
They are very helpful and have a dedicated Naval History librarian as well as Plymouth Directories and old maps.

The library in Plymouth is 2 mins walk from my work, so for a lunchtime I can have a look at any local newspapers for you - also, i can visit the West Devon Record Office in plymouth should you require anything looked up.....baptisms, marriages, burials for Devon area......
