Casssey - Watt -n Aberdeen
« on: Thursday 24 July 08 20:54 BST (UK) »

I am looking for a Margaret Watt who married James Cassey in Aberdeen, Scotland.  They had three children, a boy, name unknown, and two daughters, Mary, born 10/10/1826, and Isabel, dob, unknown.  Mary had a brother named Joseph who supposedly graduated college at Edinburgh.  James is said to have sailed to the US and not been heard from again.  Mary and the 3 children followed him and ended up in RI.  It is believed that James died at sea.  The unknown son also is believed to have died at sea.

Family tradition states that Mary was about 6 when they sailed to the US.  Apparently, Margaret had forgotten something at home and sent Mary back for it.  Giving the impression that they lived very near the docks.  Mary returned with the item and the ship was pulling away from the dock and one of the stevedores picked her up and tossed her to someone on the ship.

Once in the US, Mary married, in 1850, Providence, RI, William Penn Collins.  Uncle Watt, Jopeph, I believe, came to RI also.  He married, I believe, Harriett Byron Colemer in or near Providence, RI.

This story has been handed down from her daughters to spread throughout the family.  I have no further info on her life in Aberdeen.  Hopefully some one can give me some direction on finding out more about the family.

Thanks, Bobbie

Hi Bonnie

Just to clarify from some of your other messages on the web  Grin

......It was Margaret WATT, the mother, who had a brother Joseph WATT...
Margaret and the children (including Mary) who left Scotland and ended up in RI

When Mary married William Penn COLLINS in Apr 1850 in Providence RI, it was at the home of Joseph WATT.
Attendees included Harriet B WATT snr, Harriet B WATT Jnr and Isabel Y CASSEY......

IGI has these extracted entries:
Joseph WATT and Isobel YOUNG
married: 6 Dec 1792 St Nicholas Aberdeen
Issue:
Margaret WATT chr 13 Jan 1794 Aberdeen
Joseph WATT chr 3 Oct 1795 Aberdeen
----------------------------------------------------
Margaret WATT, daughter of Joseph WATT
married: James CASEY 16 Aug  1826  at  Saint Nicholas Blotter And Scroll, Aberdeen

It looks like Mary's sister Isabel Y CASSEY, was born about 1835 - in New York? And named after her maternal grandmother.....

1850: North Providence RI
Joseph WATTS 50, Labourer, b Scot.
Harriet B WATTS 52, b MA
Harriet WATTS 28, b MA
Isabella CASEY 15, b NY
Plus a number of Labourers

Possible? 1860: State Prison, Providence RI, Ward 1
Isabel CASSEY 24, Matron State Prison, b RI

1870: Providence RI, Ward 4
Harriet B WATT 73, Keeping House, b MA
Harriet B WATT 47, Dry Goods Dealer Reti., b MA
Isabel Y CASSEY 35, Clerk in Store, b NY
Mary MOORE 13, b RI

1880: 231 Benefit? Street, Providence RI
Head: Harriet B WATT 81, Keeping House, b MA, parents b MA
Dau: Harriet B WATT 58, Keeping Store, b MA, father b Scotland, mother b MA
Neice: Isabel  CASSY  45, Keeping Store, b NY, parents b Scotland

1900: Can't find her?

1910: Pawtucket Avenue, East Providence, RI,
Belle Y CASSEY 72, unm, b New York, parents b England, no occupation, rented [enumerated alone]

Probable? Rhode Island Death Index 1630-1930
Belle Y CASSEY died 17 Sep 1919, age 84 yrs
Relative 1:James J CASSERLY
Relative 2:Julia E CASSERLY

If this is Mary's sister - then it would seem Margaret gave birth to at least Isabel abt 1835, after arriving in the US?

I also noticed, that Mary - in the 1900 Census in Mukwonago, Waukesha County, Wisconsin, gave her year of immigration to the US as 1840, so that doesn't tie in with Isabel being born abt 1835 NY. Perhaps their year of arrival was around 1834/35 - which would make Mary abt 8 or 9 when they arrived?

Cheers
